Whoops, I'm smart. Let's try that again: Debug Message: Version v1.6 Dark Avatar last updated on: Wed Jun 6 08:51:50 2007 Debug Message: Checking DX Version. Actually, now that I look through the forum again, my problems look pretty similar to what is being described here . The debug.err from the previous post is from when the game crashed from clicking on the "Next" button on the star desnity / anomolies / etc. options selection screen.

Hi, sorry if this has been covered, but I couldn't find it. Since updating to 1.6, Dark Avatar crashes when I do ... pretty much anything. Loading a saved game, restarting a DA campaign mission, restarting the DA campaign, starting a new sandbox game (clicking on the "Next" button after the screen when you set the star density, anomolies options, etc). So, I guess I can never actually get past the menus. Dread Lords still seems to work, and I had no such problems with earlier version

I have a quick question, is there a differance in fire rate of the differant weapon types? Do you get just as many attacks with missles as say with lasers? Correct. Every weapon fires once per round. The only difference between then is which defense they are least effective against. If an enemy ship had no defenses, it would make absolutely no

I must say that's an interesting idea (why do I never think of these?). Specializing like that would let you put your race points into either econ or research bonuses. You'd also avoid the waste that comes from having your factories / labs only being utilized at whatever percent you're allocating spending to them. That definitely seems worth a try.

OK SO THAT MEANS THAT I WILL DO 1 OR 2 POINTS ON EVERY ATTACK AND THEY ARE GOING TO DO 12 OR HIGHER ON EVERYONE OF THEIR ATTACK EVEN IF THEY HAVE ZERO DEFENSE AND I HAVE A 24 DEFENSE AS IN THE ABOVE EXAMPLE AND THAT IS WHAT THEY WERE DOING IN EVERY ATTACK FOR MORE THAN 2 TURNS Well, like with everything involving random rolls, luck is involved.

Well, there's generally going to be a good chance for enemy weapons to do *some* damage unless your defense is extremely high compared to their weapons. Just to keep things simple, lets say your ship has 4 defense and the enemy ship has 4 attack. They're not going to damage you too often right? Wrong. Here's a breakdown of the rolls and the damage done to you: DAMAGE - THEIR ATTACK ROLL - YOUR DEFENSE ROLL 4 - 4 - 0 3 - 3 - 0<br/

Hah, looks like the humans' +10% to ship hit points will really help against that thing [sigh]. Now one of their mediums with no defenses will only be killed in a single shot 87.4% of the time instead of 88.2% of the time.

- Structures incridebly expensive to build to the last tech (I mean, come on. 6 constructors for the best mining bonuses? It should be 60!) - Multi-constructor module on a single cargo ship. That way, it would be a lot quicker to build HEAVY starbases Don't those two kind of contradict each other? I don't really like the whole flying construc

Yea, I would like to see space monsters make a reappearance, perhaps they could have a planet where they breed, once u conquer it no more space monsters? Several different varietys would be cool and interesting. That sounds suspiciously like the "Dread Lords on Parade" custom game.

I only saw the series premier of Atlantis and didn't like it, so I stopped watching. Later on I went back and saw a chunk of the first and second seasons (plus what's running now) and I actually like the show better than SG-1 now. I think it's because I like the characters more on Atlantis (except for Ronin and Shepard), either that or I'm just getting sick of the SG-1 crew.

Luck had little to do with the Hood's demise. The ship had some fairly decisive flaws. Like a gaping hole in it's hull? Actually I remember reading up on it a while ago. Wasn't the Hood spending all of its time on tour around the world ("Hey look a

You can also equip every other one with sensors, defensive modules, and combat boosters in case things go south at the battlefront and you need to buy time for a retreat and regrouping. Wouldn't it be cheaper just to plop a fleet of tiny/small ships down on the same square as the starbase? You need a ton of constructors to get starbase attack/de

Does speed help in the battle or just getting to the battle? If it does how? Just getting to the battle. Before version 1.2 the fleet that started the battle got a free attack at the beginnng that defending ships couldn't respond to. This made initiating combat (and thus, having higher speed than your enemies) hugely important. This is

Because using a firewall and avoiding IE like the plague is so very, very hard to do Heh, the first firewall program I installed on my PC correupted my windows registry and I had to reformat. Yay for using something like Firefox instead of IE though.

Well, I think the idea is that you prepare and position your ships/fleets in such a way as to give yourself the best chance of winning each battle. That's where the skill comes in. Does this mean you also feel combat in other turn-based games lacks some skill? (attack/defense rolls in the Civs, damage/to-hit/evasion rolls in MOO2, damage/to-hit rolls in tactical games like Jagged Alliance and Silent Storm). I don't completely disagree with you here, I think the damage a ship can do in

I don't have the game running in front of me right now, but is the order you select the ships the only thing you're doing differently? Like, when you go left to right are you also selecting all of the ships in that tile for your fleet whereas you aren't going right to left? Or are you selecting the exact same ships each time, just in a different order?

I didn't even realize you got the freighters back when you lost a trade route due to war breaking out. Is this true? Maybe my (new) enemy just popped them all immediately after the war started.

Build more constructor ships (the same ones you used to build the initial starbase). Move those ships onto the same square as the starbase. Each ship lets you add one upgrade module.

4 Replies 2,942 Views

Defense only applies to the ship it's on, not other ships in the fleet. Only exception there are the defense bonuses that a military starbase can give to ships within its radius. I don't know why the AI would put defense and no offense on its ships. Only reason I can think of is that there may be a UP vote for adding defense to all cargo ships (or is that weapons?)

What I'm wondering is how it goes from Terrans and co. have been beating up Drengin everywhere to Drengin-suddenly-rule-the-galaxy-and-everyone-else is just a pitiful resistance movement. Hah, I was wondering that too. Especially since the Drengins/Yor/Dreadlords/etc. were never big on building many (read: any) combat ships when I played the cam

Reply to Galciv GALAXIES in Ideas

Well, I think the space addon is more shooter-y than rpg-y, but I stopped playing Galaxies *long* before that expansion came out. But yea, the Battlefield games or maybe Planetside might be a better comparison.

5 Replies 3,339 Views

Sounds like a bit of a micromanagement nightmare to me, especially on the larger galaxies when you can have hundreds of ships flying around. I remember MOO2 had escape pods you could add, but those only worked on the special leaders you could assign to a ship, not the actual crew. Since each empire could only have 4 of those leaders, reassigning them wasn't such a big deal. Personally, I'd rather see the starbase construction get streamlined a bit before more complexities get added in

1 Replies 2,290 Views

I haven't had much luck with defense personally, at least later on in the game. Since attack values get so much higher without a corresponding increase in ship hit points, I rarely find it worthwhile to add defense. A medium ship with 16 hit points and 10 defense is still usually going to die in one hit against a ship with 80 attack. The only difference is that the medium with defense is going to cost more to build and have less firepower, meaning enemy ships may end up getting more shots at
