Automate freighters?

Avoid having to micromanage them

Is it possible to automate freighters so that they make there own way to planets?

It occurred to my that I hadn't been bothering with them for a while.

If I have ten freighters and war is constantly braking out between races I end up spending most of time trying to find where the freighters are that have been cancelled due to dangerous environments or whatever.

Then I need to try to figure out a safe place to send them.

Why can't the computer have an option allowing me to just send them on there way without constant intervention - I mean it really doesn't add much to the game having to continually search for these ships and re-divert them, does it?

Not really. All there is to do is pick a planet and click on it. Automating the procss of dispatching freighters really wouldn't make sense because it's up to you to decide which planets you send them to. Do you send them across the galaxy for more money but also more danger? Do you send them to your neightbor to improve relations? Do you send them to a minor race and protect them from attacks by the other majors?

Well surveying and exploring can be automated, and GalCiv1 had automated attacking, so why not auto-trade?

Can't see why there can't be a auto switch, it could ask you if you want to risk a long route or stick to safe close routes.

I didn't even realize you got the freighters back when you lost a trade route due to war breaking out. Is this true? Maybe my (new) enemy just popped them all immediately after the war started.

If you do get them back, then at some point on the next turn the auto-focus should snap to it.

Since I usually just trade with one race in my games. I pick their best planet and rally my best economic planet to it. You could easily do this with other planets and other races as well. Once my freighter number matches my trade routes. I turn off the using rally point and change what's being built. I don't know if the freighter stays on the rally point so that you could use your governor to quickly switch it. But, it wouldn't take much to pick a new rally point (due to war) and redirect all your freighters there.

Trade affects too many things to simply automate it. It's more than just near and far. It's also which races you want to trade with. You really don't want to help the income of your enemy.
