I noticed that quite often a lot of races in my games used the same type of weapon. It was not so extreme specialization as you've seen, but 7 of 9 races using the same weapon was not uncommon. However I've also seen them switch wapon type - after building quite some low-tech ships of one type, they started producing warships with another one.

Just wait and see what happens in your game. And enjoy the advantage of wrong defenses for your weapons while it lasts.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that the game I am referring to is almost over. I would have already won if the Jagged Edge hadn't showed up when I only had ~15 planets left to conquer



Indeed. At no point did any of the opponent AIs build any defenses vs. my missile tech. I would have thought they'd switch to PDs at some point; they've certainly adapted in other games.

I know that at least the Yor and Altarians did do some research into other weapon techs; I know because I took them when I conquered their planets. Fairly high levels, too -- pretty sure I took the Doom Ray from the Yor. So, both races were researching but not using.

Also, the difficulty is, hmmm, Crippling, I think, so the AIs should be smart enough to think about this. It's possible, I suppose, that the AIs might be playing at lower difficulty levels. I'm not at my home pc right now, so cannot check this.
