I think every now and then you might get a message saying your spies have stolen a tech, and the tech completed screen comes up. Other than that, espionage is rather useless except for being able to see your opponents planets in the planet screen and the stats, as far as I can tell. If you invade a planet you are likely to steal techs also, and that without espionage. I never use it anymore and consider it a waste of money. The only thing I really need to see is what weapons and defenses are on

How many are using the 1.2 beta now? No more first strike/no response kills. Now the attacked ship gets at least one shot off, so defenses are now as important as weapons.

I had a similar thing happen with the Drengin. I missed the message, if there was one, that I was no longer at war with them. One turn I was blowing up ships and at war, and the next turn when I attacked a ship the message came up saying that if I attack the ship the Drengin will declare war on me. When I checked the Treaties screen, sure enough, I was no longer at war with them. And I was the one that declared war in the first place. I never could figure out how my own war got pre-empted b

It may be like the Xeno Ethics. You may have to actually complete the research on it for it to trigger the bonus. If you give yourself Xeno Ethics at the start you will never be given the choice to select an alignment. Looks like you might have to keep a cost of at least 1 for it to work correctly.

Mine often skips during the initial loading screens, or when loading a saved game. I haven't been able to track it down yet. It shouldn't be my system specs, I have a 2.8GHz Pentium D, 3GB of ram, SATA drive with 16MB cache, Sound Blaster Audigy 4 and Geforce 6800GS video. I guess it could be a faulty sound card, but it does not skip except during certain times, like loading a game. It clears up pretty quickly during the setup screens.

It does seem faster, and yes the focus is now an option that can be changed during gameplay. You should download and try it. You can always revert back to the older version if you don't like it.

Ya, it might be a bit much. Oh well. I'm a speed freak. darthfalz, the values were copied and pasted, then changed a bit, or a bit much as Coplann said. Coplann, this game is a time waster for me right now. I literally have nothing much else to do. I just like to watch the space battles. And using your ships is a pleasure, they are wonderfully detailed. And, I put them in as S99, so the AI should be able to use them too, I think. Never seen them do it though.<br/

And you might update the sound drivers, they are pretty old. And sometimes virus programs can interfere with the game also. It is a good idea to exclude the GalCiv folders from real-time scanning.

You will find this line in the Prefs.ini: AllowCPUIntensiveAlgorithms=0 Unfortunately, if you set it to 1 it resets itself back to 0. So it does not appear that it is quite implemented yet. And that line has been in there since version 1.1. All of us with enough CPU power to take advantage of it are awaiting eagerly, I'm sure. I know I am.

Why is it, and this is repeatable every time, that when I log on to this site, click the GalCiv2 logo at the top to take me to the forums page, Why is it that my CPU usage jumps to around 50%, maxxing out one of my CPU's? And it remains there even if I close the browser. It acts like this with no other site than this one, and it is getting really, REALLY irritating. I have delete the temp internet files and reboot to get it back to nornal.

I never use a cargo hull for troop transports, usually a small hull with the advanced troop modules.

I still have it in 1.11, and I think I was the first to discover it in the 1.1 beta's. The only way around it is in the Governor screen by selecting the Ranger on the left and Nothing on the right and updating. It happens, I am pretty sure, once you get the black hole mass driver and up to a particular armor defense. I am glad to hear it is fixed in 1.2, just another reason to drool over that update. Thanks CodeCritter, for mentioning that.

If it really does lead one's race to randomly discover techs, then the only way to really test it is not to build any research facilities at all.

I don't think it is working yet, but it is supposed to allow the AI to do more complicated calculations, I think. So, if it does get implimented it will take longer for each turn to complete, but the result may be a more competitive AI.

At the very least you need to update those 4 year old video drivers. Updating the audio would be a good idea as well, and Service Pack 2 for XP. I don't think you can upgrade the video on the laptop. It is integrated onto the MB, and you don't have AGP or PCI slots to add a card.

512MB is really not enough. I have 3GB and it will usually get into the 1.6-2GB range on the huge maps. I am not crazy about the gigantic maps, so I have not checked the memory usage with them. But it really gets up there. And don't make that a complaint point because Stardock advertises that 512 is enough. It is enough to play the game, but not at full speed obviously. This is a game that can actually utilize serious hardware configurations (like lots of ram and dual processors), but

It is not gettng two or three techs at once. That is pure research ability. If you add enough research facilities that happens all the time. And you can see it accumulate in the little indicator window in the lower left of the screen that shows how long you have left to research. Add some research facilities and that will go from 4 to 2 (for example) in one turn. If the indicator is just a hair away from full, you will probably get 2 techs with that next turn, if the next tech is not to costly.

So very often it is the good aligned races that try to take over the galaxy. They are often the main aggresors in the game.

I know between hyperthreading and multi cpu's. I have been building and using multi cpu systems far longer than hyperthreading has been around. My current system is a dual core, and my last was a dual processor P3.

Going Neutral may not require you to research Terraforming, but it is a good idea to anyway. Then you can get the Aphrodesiac trade good. And even with the NLC, I always research at least as far as Discovery Sphere to get the Omega Research Facility. If you're going to focus on research, may as well do it right. And you also need to research up the missle defense tree if you want the Super Computers, which give another 20% to research. You may have guessed, I always go for Neutra

No, the multi-thread option has been in from the beginning. It is an entry in the Prefs.ini, as is the AI setting. But the AI setting is not working yet, I'm pretty sure. There has been some other threads on it as well. Setting the value to 1 gets changed back to 0 by default. These are the two entries in the Prefs.ini: HyperthreadEnhancement=1 AllowCPUIntensiveAlgorithms=0 It already does use dual CPU's, I have verified it on my machine. And the dev's have s
