Negative Hit Points ship

Nothing like an enemy ship that can't defend against a weapon that does 0 damage!

I take it the ship was damaged prior to upgrading?

If you have a save that demonstrates this problem, please zip it up and send it to [email protected] with your debug.err, a description of the problem, and a link back to this thread.

As Loupdinour implied isn't that how the upgrade of a damaged ship has always worked?

IIRC whenever you upgrade an undamaged ship then during the upgrade it goes to 1 HP out of 1 HP max. If the ship is damaged then while its being upgraded it can have a negative HP. I've never had a ship being upgraded attacked, generally because I park a top line fleet on top of my upgrading ships, so I don't know what happens if it is attacked but I don't believe this is considered a bug.

It's a bug. I commonly 'repair' heavily damaged ships by running them to my own territory, and 'upgrading' them to a version of the ship where 1 weapon is traded for defense, or vice versa. The ships have always been 1/1 no matter how much damage was inflicted on them before upgrading. The image shows the ship at -4/1

End of quote

Funny because I get -X/1 all the time when upgrading damaged ships. Perhaps it's an old version issue that's crept back into the code because I'm still using DL v1.4x.

There is one other way to get a ship with negative HP. If you have a ship in orbit around a planet with the Omaga Defense build (the one that doubles HP) with less than half it's HP remaining and you launch it, it will have negative HP. Putting it back into orbit will NOT restore it to positive HP. No worries, the game will remove the ship when you hit next turn (ouch). Although that was rev 1.11 or 1.2. It may have been fixed since then.
