Custom ships with different races, can't have the same names?

On the latest TA beta.

I have no idea if this was an issue in the past with DA or DL but I never ran into it.

Played a game as the Arceans and had many custom ships. Example might be "Defender M2".

In my current game as the Korx I have tried to create a custom ship and also call it "Defender M2" and it gives me the warning that you shouldn't name a new ship the same name as a current custom ship name.

Sooo, I had always thought that the custom ship files were race specific or at least ship style specific, but I guess they aren't? If they aren't then I think that should be a feature in TA that custom ship names don't conflict between races or ship types from game to game.

QFT. I don't want to make up a dozen different sets of ship names to avoid overwriting another race's version of the same ship.

It was like that in past versions of GalCiv.

I'm quite unimaginative in my ship naming scheme so I always seem to step on my toes when playing a new race. I hit "ok" and keep on trucking though. I rarely have 2 games going at once, so I don't see how it'll be a problem to me.

That surprised me too, in earlier versions. You'd think the game could segregate the ship files by race, but it doesn't.

What I've been doing is using a race ID in the name, like "Freighter 1 KX" for a Korx ship. That lets me re-use the name Freighter with different races. I do use some special names with different races, usually for the combat designs. But I can't keep track of unique names for all the different utility types like sensor picket ships, constructors, freighters, etc.

I'm pretty sure ships aren't race specific. In my version of the game (DL 1.5, don't have DA) all the ships are saved to the "ships" folder in the GalCiv2 folder, and it doesn't differentiate between the files according to race, so if you have a ship "Doom" for the Korx, it would have the same file name and extension of the ship "Doom" made for the Terrans, or Arceans, or whoever.

Edit: As a possible fix, you could try deselecting the "Save Ship Designs to Hard Drive" option, I personally haven't tried that yet, but it seems like it would work.

I also think the space available to name ships is far too short, all the AIs can call their ships longer names such as "Altarian Heavy Fighter M1 V2" but I couldn't name my ships the same way because I run out of typing space...it's not fair!

Maybe they just name it "Heavy Fighter M1 V2" and the game appends Altarian for you.

Not that I know right at this moment if "Heavy Fighter M1 V2" is too long or not.
