I wonder, what is being done about the minor frustrations that were present in the old ship building system? One of the worst has been fixed, judging by the screenshot of the new system, with all those nice parts laid out for you on the left. Being able to see three (more?) times as many pieces in one nice array is a lovely change.
However, I occasionally found myself frustrated with the building system. The most apparent was when just moving my trackpad even one pixel off target would cause my piece to get stuck way on the other side of the ship, and when you shrink pieces way down like I do, the sheer density of hardpoints makes this a very common problem.
Then there were the times I realized that certain Altarian and Terran bits aren't precisely symmetrical. I would twist and rotate pieces in crazy ways before finally realizing that it wasn't my fault. In retrospect, it was probably because the piece's attachment point was not centered. Being able to move the point at which the piece is attached to the hardpoint would be a wonderful change.
In my eye, the pieces weren't adequately "highlighted" when you selected them in the top menu. This makes it hard to delete just one piece that you placed way back, and changed your mind about. Often, I couldn't tell the difference at all, even after rotating the ship.
And finally, if you have the camera at a certain angle, the ship piece appears right in your face, obscuring your view, unless you hover over a hardpoint.
Don't get me wrong, the building system is absolutely wonderful. This is just my 2cp on what might be improved.
