Well the obvious things are play larger maps, with lots of planets.
Military victory is a good bit better than the rest. (check the wiki.)
Longer games help to a point, as long you are building more points than you are losing by their averaging formula.
Getting a good start, and taking out someone early help immensely. The techs you steal, and the planets start integrating into your score much earlier.
Most who are going for a big score play with fast tech. I personally don't care for that style of game though. Essentially it allows you to be building mega ships earlier, and to not need to worry about research much earlier in the game.
It seems the factors basically add from turn to turn, and get divided by turns. (and then multiplied by a factor depending on your victory condition) (factors being things like population, economy, military, etc.) So if you could manage a very fast win, you could get a lot of points there too.
Lastly most disable the alternate victory conditions. This allows you to not have to worry about getting a culture victory, or the Ais getting a tech victory. (also once the research tree is done, you can keep spending money on research just to gain points.)
