Not sure if this is possible but would it not solve the problem for saving if it does it by turn. THe current situation as mentioned here many times is that you and the Ai both get an empty turn in which you can move but produce nothing. I thin kthe problem relates to the game trying to save everything in the middle of a turn. If the game was altered to save at the beginning of a turn only then this might stop. The only problem is you would not be able to load a turn part way through. You would have to finish the turn and then save at the beginning of the next or an autosave saves every turn.
The real problem with the current system is it can be exploited.
Example:
Take a fleet or two deep in enemy territory. The extra turn of movement really benefits you as the enemy cannot build new ships which they would use right away (big loss) and you cannot build ships that you would have to wait for ayway (no loss).
Another possible advantage is that if it is setup to save at the turn then they may be able to use it to fix the metaverse problem as well. If it is from the turn they could set something in the code allowing you to continue your last game and not start a new one until that one is finished. This would make the scoring have a real value.
