Newbie Question about planetary invasion

Retail Version 1.0

I was wondering why it is that the attacker always seems to have such high advantage. I did read on the wiki that they get +5 points for air superiority. Still, sometimes I'll get a good "roll" and the odds will be like 50 v. 5, even with relatively close Soldier bonuses. Is it ever possible for the defender to get better than 1:1 odds, or is their "die roll" capped? Looking at all the info I've gathered, as long as the defender has 5 more soldiering than the attacker, and the attacker doesn't use any special assaults, the odds should be even, right?

I'm kinda curious, because I wonder if any of the planetery defense techs are worthwhile. Once I finally get the latest patch, I would like to try making a race based on high population growth and morale. I might not even defend myself with starships; just let them come to me and die. Thanks.

Oh yeah, one last question if you don't mind. I noticed that every race gets a small influence bonus that grows as the game goes on, and is separate from the racial bonus. What gives you this bonus, total population?

I usually get the supreme planetary defense level, as well as shock troops. I very seldom lose a planet, or lose when I attack.

I have played games where I am on the poor end of the ratio. Often against the Dread Lords I will grant but a few times in proper games

The influens bonus grows when you colonize a new planet, build a new starbase, invent new technology's, build embassy's or galactic achievements...
