Greetings,
I have played a lot of games in GalCiv2, and here is a list of suggestions that I think might greatly improve the gameplay experience, without too much cost on the programming side!
* Make ship upgrading more transparant. As of now, sometimes it works, sometimes it won't. Usually, it won't. It would be nice if this were functional. Right now, I have to rebuild an entire fleet every year or so to stay competative. Scrapping my old fleet of 30ish small/medium craft merely gives me 200bc or so, while their actual costs were hundreds of times above that. At least give back a fair percentage of the hull costs.
* Only allow upgrading ships in starports. Upgrading them out there in space makes no sense at all. How do they get the new parts? Calculate the costs for upgrading schematically as follows; +price of new parts, -price of scrapped parts, +upgrading fee. Should never exceed the costs of a new ship, but also shouldn't be too cheap either.
* Please, please, please give us an option to turn of that devilshly annoying auto-focus. To me, and I know from earlier posts for others as well, it is immensely annoying especially on huge/gigantic maps. For example, you are micromanaging your attack fleet in some corner of the universe, but after giving each single ship its orders, you are thrown back halfway the universe to that lone scout ship...
* This might cost some time programming, but I definatly feel its missing: rework the AI on higher difficulty levels. As it stands now, it is using tons of tiny ships without forming adaquate fleets. The well-known huge-collection-of-tiny-ships-in-one-place-that-never-do-anything syndrome. Also, make it so the AI more actively updates its fleet according to current tech.
* The AI's go-to-war logic is just illogical. Right now, it seems only to base its descision on the daft millitary rating, not taking into account
potential, technology edge, etc... When at war, and opting for peace, please let the AI take into account the time derivative of the millitary rating, i.e., if one of your ships takes out half their fleet in 1 or 2 weeks, it should definatly be aware it is not going well for it.
I hope someone in power will consider these points
