I left the UP for the first time ever in a game last week. It was the first year, and my empire was still struggling economically. The vote was to push everyone back to "empire" government (whatever the default starting government type is). I was already at the top one (Federation?). The push back REALLY crippled my economy. I begrudgingly left the UP, thinking no trade meant no trade screens. Once I saw it just meant trade routes, I was ecstatic. I i

Posting so I can see mine. Should be low, registered back during the GC1 days. Also played the OS/2 version WAY back, but no idea if there was a Metaverse back then or not. If I had registered then, I'd REALLY have a low number :)
Heck, I still play Grandest Fleet, which I bought in 1994 :)
I put a farm on every planet, no exceptions. With terraforming, and morale techs and resource SBs, I find it's no problem at all. And the reason you want more people, even on planets way behind the lines, is because more people = more cash. I also have stopped building any morale structures. I don't find I really need them, if I don't go above 13B on any planets. I do find building one morale structure on my homeworld helpful, since it can go to 16B. But one of the capitals (politi
Cari, The video driver update did the trick, and GC2 works fine on the PC now. Thanks again!
Hey, quick question for you guys that have played tons of games. I noticed in the after-game scoring screens that it reports WAY bigger numbers for total leases paid, than what I actually paid. As near as I can figure out, it's extrapolating what I would have paid if the game had continued on. Does this have any impact on the score? In other words, does a large balance of leases owed detract from your score? Another reason I ask is, if I know the game is gettin
Hm. I do have DA installed, but I guess the new combat system doesn't apply to the original campaign?
No, it doesn't. That's mainly because they're really different games, as opposed to expansions. When you fire up GC2, you'll see a button on the splash screen labeled "switch chapters" or something like that. That changes between GC2:Dread Lords (DL) and GC2:Dark Avatar (DA). If you play DL, you don't see any of the DA changes. You're still playing DL. If you switch
Cari, Thanks, I will do that. I guess it's another mark against Microsoft, their utility to check driver versions said I was up-to-date. Thanks for the great support! Silly question, I have Vista Home Premium, so I assume I need the 32-bit drivers from Nvidia? They are offering both 32- and 64-bit versions. Thanks!
Bump. Anyone know what's up with this?
Background: Vista/GC2/Dark Avatar/Gigantic/all abundant I just moved GC2 over to my newer Vista PC, because the video card on my XP machine keeps crashing. Game loads fine on the Vista PC, and runs much faster, but it totally locks up when doing an autosave (probably the fourth or fifth autosave of the session). If I alt-tab, I see a Stardock error dialog that says "Out of memory". Both PCs have 2GB of RAM, and I upped the swap space on the new PC to 6BG, to
I got this event in my last game. The minor would only trade the techs for my home planet, but not the other 12 planets combined!! Fortunately, there's no penalty for just ignoring the event, and not trading for the techs.
It would not be really nice, REALLY NICE, if the uninhabited planet list showed at a glance not only its PQ but also whether it was generally inhabitable or was of a certain type: i.e., radioactive, toxic, aquatic, barren, HG.Right now whether I have the tech or not, when I look at the uninhabited list, I have to click on it to see what type it is.Maybe in the uninhabited colony list, the little pic would show what type it is. Or put an R, T, A, B, of H in the corner of the box. Before I p
Interesting suggestions. I have a couple more: 1 - In the planet management screen (the spreadsheet-type screen). Make it so that I can see >what 2 - In the planet/fleet sidebar window, two changes would be a HUGE help. First, make the sorting choices a drop-down, instead of th
@stanley tarrant: completely agree; but I think its also the nature of TBS, you need to have a certain amount of critical thinking skills to just be able to playanyhow...26 here
44 here, and Go Boilers! :)
Hey all! I just started playing GC2 again, and saw the new expansion is in Beta. I have two questions regarding it: 1 - Do we have to pay to participate in the Beta (i.e. can we download it)? Or is download limited to specific Beta testers? 2 - Does it work like DL/DA does, where we can pick at runtime which expansion we want to run? So if TA is too buggy, we can go and play DA or DL instead? Thanks!
+ Improvements Tweaked: A value here, a new bonus there...several improvements are now 'more better' based on player feedback Any chance on a detailed list of these changes?
I never did see this posted anywhere else, so I did a diff on the planetaryimprovements.xml file before and after the patch. Here are the changes: 1 - Galactic Showcase's description now states it affects Diplomacy, instead of Influence 2 - Entertainment N
Well, Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein (two fairly well known scientists) would disagree with you. Both were Deists (believed in God). Between them and you, I'll agree with them Oh and one more thing... "all objects tend toward chaos ,that is the norm . order is the stranger aspect of the cosmos ,as it takes some system to maintain order,be it natural or biological . but do not
As Billy Graham used to say "You caaannnn Feeeeeeel the Loove" As far as I know, he's still saying it
Sounds like a blast! I think I'll join you, but work up from the bottom. The highest cakewalk score I could find was ~13K. I'm running a small cakewalk game now (started it last night). I'll see if I can break that. I'm not shooting for a set high score. I'm too new at the game, and am still learning what's what at this point.
Got another one: Race: Altarians Size: Small Years: 3 Alignment: Neutral Difficulty: Cakewalk (don't ask ) Score: 4600 Volume: 1.61 DA Date: 7/9/07 Tech win I tried to mess around with the concept that Wyndstar first posted in this thread (a 20 minute, 1 year tech win). My conclusion is that I'm utterly incapable of reproducing his results <img src="http://
You played Drengin as neutral? Why? You can have easy 100% econ bonus, plus awesome weapons bonuses with evil!!!! Why ever play Drengin as neutral???!!! Well, let's see.... I'm pretty new to the game, so didn't realize this was bad form. I like neutral for the Morale (more taxes, more pop) and soldier bonus, for invasions. I guess I missed where evil gets an econ bonus, I don't remember seeing that in the description. And as far as better we
Well, the Drengin had no points when I started this game. Now I'm just adding to their lead This was my first military conquest, as well as my first painful game. Took a lot longer than my tough cultural win! Character: SeanThornton Race: Drengin Years: 5 Dif: Painful Victory: Military Size: Large Alignment: Neutral Score: 42000 v.1.61DA 7/2/2007
One of the things I'd like to see is the damage done scaled to the length of the battle. Sometimes, I know I'll lose with traditional invasion, but with the 100-200% increase with mass drivers, it's really no contest at all, and I win with 900-950m troops left (starting with 1000m). In that situation, the battle didn't last long (obviously), so the damage should be less. If I have 50m troops left at the end of the battle, then obviously, it was a knock-down-drag-out affair, an
I am always behind on those "top XX" list, yet most of the time I win ( maso and suicidal diff) - Do not pay too much attention to them they do not reflect real situation most of the time What you say is true. However, that ranking is based on military rating, and if you are too low, others will be more prone to pick on you or start a war. So if you don't want a war yet, keep enough military ships around to stay in the top two or three militar
Never mind The payments were all the same, but the payment periods were all smaller. That's where the neutral bonus kicks in. Sorry for the confusion.
