How long do you think Galactic Civ will last?

after hearing about twilight of the Arnor expanson being the last exspason for Gal Civ 2, I began to wonder how long do think the game will last. I woul like to see a Gal Civ 3 come out, hopefully with a online syestem where you can play other humans, but how long will peoples intrest keep on for this game? If you have any ideas, please reply on this post so I dont have to go around the web site gathering info. Also sorry for any spelling erors, I am not good at spelling.

Hmmm. You spell better than a lot of people.

As to your question, This is a game that seems timeless. It is so varied that it should be fun to play long after the last update and/or expansion.

I too look forward to a GalCiv3. An if it can be done with a well done multiplayer, all the better.
But multiplayer in GC2 is not that practical, nor would it be in any turn-based game I think.
Just getting up from a 4-hour game to get some chow would effectively stall the game for quite a long time, especially if it was internet based. LAN based might be a different story, though.

For me it will last a very long time, games of this genre always do. Before GalCiv2, I still played MOO2, and still do from time to time, and that game came out around 10 years ago I think. I still also play Civilization 2, more because I'm too lazy to get the newer ones lol, but the point is I still enjoy playing it. I see GalCiv2 in my gaming life for many many years to come.

Since it's a single player game it isn't reliant upon a group of people all liking it at the same time. While it might not sell many copies as it once did, the game is designed so that regardless of who else still cares about the game the individual can still enjoy the full experience.

I would say that so long as a future OS can run it, someone will be playing it (there are still MOO2 people running about I'm told).

Well considering that there are still games being posted to the GC1 Metaverse i'd say there is plenty of life left in the game.....

As for GC3 and multiplayer...I look forward to GC3 of course...but i could care less about multiplayer....It's a turn based game!! ;p

As the others have said, I wouldn't be surprised if GalCiv 2 lasts for many years after TA. I mean, people are still creating new content for System Shock 2, and that didn't even have a supported fan-content system like GC2 does.

I give this game at least a couple of years before uninstalling, and even then the discs will be kept in good order on my shelf. This game is right up there with Alpha Centauri and Heroes of Might and Magic III. Quality never ages :CONGRAT:

i went to my local ebgames and saw Galciv 2 gold edition, dark avatar expansion included. The price is still 39.99 $CDN. Dark Avatar expansion sells for around the same price. I don't see it going away or fading away anytime soon. Plus, there are always mods being created for the game.

In fact i do not know any other game (besides online multiplayer games like Diablo II and maybe CounterStrike) I have spent more time with. Normally i get bored very early on, most games never even make it being played through because i have a problem to be concentrated on one game for many hours. Most games just dont entertain me long enough. Because of some mysterious unknown reason this game is not this way. GalCiv II keeps entertaining me for hours and hours and it seems that the longer you play the more you get aware of the details of the game and the enormous possibilities - it actually gets better with time, not less entertaining like most games. Stardock did a fantatstic job, noone of my friends had known GalCiv before, but all i introduced it to were sucked into it and are still playing it. Actually i dont want GalCiv III, because that means focusing on an entirely new game. I dont want that, i want to get all out of the second part at first. The TA Expansion pushes the limits of the game far away again and i think i can not avoid to buy it. :)

Personally (and I may be wrong) I think Galciv 3 is a long time coming. Stardock has been developing and supporting this game for 2 years and I think they may want to move on to other genres for a while like getting out that MMO they showcased a while back and maybe developing a new fantasy TBS.

The Galciv series won't die out but I think Stardock will take a break and since they only have enough manpower to really work on 1 or 2 games at a time...

I mean think about it. Id took over a decade to go from Doom 2 to Doom 3. Valve took forever to get Team Fortress 2 and Half Life 2 out (but they were oh so worth the wait!). Galciv isn't Madden (thankfully) and when ToA is out I think that will hold people for a good long time.

F..O..R..E..V..E..R!
And, here's why;
- Best quality and replayability factors for the buck.
- Superb customer support by people who DO care.
- Rather unique gameplay experiences if one considers what true TBS is exactly.
- I like Sci-Fi stuff, anything.

Heck, I still play Grandest Fleet, which I bought in 1994 :)

GC3 could be like Sins of a Solar empire, an RTS/4X, but with more diplomacy and other 4X features. Just a thought.

I think it will last quite a while. I still play Master of Orion II and Alpha Centauri. Even Pax Imperia (not as good a game, but the second I ever got so it holds sentimental value). I think it's probably got at least 10 years from the release of twilight. Great games live a long time.

I was at a Half-Price bookstore the other day and they are still selling new copies of Master of Orion 2 for $10. That is a good game (unlike its poor sequels) and game out years ago. This is an excellent game that I purchased after wasting money ($50) on the last MOO (3?) game that was a disaster.

So I expect this game to be around for many years, especially if the modding community comes out with some killer mods.

As for GalCiv3, I think it is already out and it is called Sins. After a few updates and maybe an expansion pack, that game will be all that GalCiv3 should be. I just hope the control scheme is upgraded .. it drives this old boy nuts.

I sincerely hope they will NOT make GC3 realtime. It simply doesn't fit. Likewise, I hope SD plays to their strengths in AI development and continues to focus on a superior single-player experience.

As for how long GC2 will last: It's already up to the third expansion and the next game will be non-MoM. So while SDs main efforts will go into that, I think they will continue to support GC2 until they begin working on GC3 in earnest. Keep in mind how long patches for DL and DA were coming out, I doubt SD will release TA and then forget about it.

They DID say they don't plan any further expansions, that's why they're releasing the editors. That doesn't mean that they will abondon it.

You think incorrectly :p

To answer the TC: For as long as I'm able to log onto Stardock Central.

Ultimately whether I play GC2 depends on what GC3 becomes. If it is simply GC2 but with even MORE stuff then I really won't need to play GC2 any more. Its analogous to the situation with Dread Lords and Dark Avatar right now. Since DA was released I've had no urge to play DL because I enjoy all the things DA added to the game. Playing DL now seems like I'm playing a beta or something. ;p

So long as something continues to satisfy my space themed 4X strategy game fix I'm a happy gamer. :)

I think I heard in Brad's podast yesterday that there will be 7 editors released with Twilight.  That should keep us all busy until they get around to GalCiv3.   :CONGRAT:

Why on Earth would anyone want that? Sins does fine at being Sins, why make another game like it? Far better (and far more important, IMO) to keep a strong line of 4X TBS space games coming out. The gaming world is full of strong RTS titles, there's a real shortage of quality TBS games (and an even more severe shortage of such games with a strong single player experience and great AI).

Amen to that!
