Brad: I've been part of the GalCiv experience from its inception as an OS/2 game. It was undoubtedly the best-selling piece of software for the platform and it was partially repsonsible for the platform's demise. (Because of GalCiv, OS/2 caught the eye of Microsoft, who proceded to dismantle it.) I first got my hands on a pirated copy of the game from someone at work, and I liked it so much I actually went and got a license for it. Back then, Stardock was a l

Hah! I never thought it that way. This is the first post I've seen about this phenom, and since you brought it to my attention, it does sound pretty silly. Maybe the population can hold off the effects of your attacks by absorbing the damage they do (which is why they die at a faster rate when you use these ataacks) - until the population is gone. Then the rocks and tidal forces act on the planet itself. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Wink.gif" border=0 ALIGN="absmiddl
A bit OT, but has any race ever approached you to form an alliance? Bill
Great idea! Beware the Outsiders! And while we're at it, bring back the Ominorians, since they were the first "minor" civ ever to grace the game. Bill
Besides, if you can concentrate on playing two games at once, you DESERVE to be able to do so legally! Bill
I'm embarrassed - I dodn't notice the original post date was way back in April. The only thing I can think of is that something is going wrong when it attempts to write from the buffer to the screen. When in v-synch mode, video cards set up at least one back buffer in addition to the memory being displayed on the screen, depending on how many buffers you specify. The theory is that when you activate v-synch, you are synching to the refresh rate of the monitor, which is *usually* slowe
Sorry, Whismerhill, I was going down the wrong path. Something could be wrong with your installation because your debug info says you are running version 1.1 BETA 4. Bill
Has anyone even discussed throttling back the video card (it's in the options menu). Even though it may not seem like it, GCII is extremely tough on your video card (one of the toughest games to date, actually). If you've OC'd your video card, it may be overheating. Throttling back the video card will help to keep it from overheating - and that's why the devs put that option in ther ein the first place. Try that and see if it helps. Plus, you're still on version 1.1. That version w
I believe that if an AI ship's turn ENDS on top of your ship, they have no choice but to declare war. The AI cannot find a path around your ship so it is forced to engage the ship. I believe the same thing happens to you, except that you will get the choice to attack or not. Bill
So, the moral of the story is... when they say "freeze the code," they really mean it. Thanks for the late-night fix! (Both the late night update *and* for *my* late night fix!) Bill
I did that before I worte this because it didn't really say anything except that they released 2a. Bill
Actually, it appears that the memory bug thing was fixed in the first beta 2. The bug appeared in beta 1 (I believe). Bill
Just curious. Bill
You got the orbit of the moon right, but it orbits the earth so fast that an observer on earth will see it rise in the WEST and set in the EAST. It just looks weird to see the moon orbiting faster than the rotation of the earth... Not to mention that all life on earth would probably be wiped out by the enormous tidal stresses the moon would put on the earth... if the moon could somehow stay in orbit without shattering into a zillion pieces or go flying off into space. <img src="http://images.s
I remember my first brush with GalCiv. Version 1.0 on OS/2. Someone at work brought in a pirated version and said, "Here, play this. You won't be able to put it down." I was so amazed that I immediately went and bought it! I figured that someone who can put out this quality stuff deserves my money. Bill
Update: AngleWyrm and SH - do you use Windowblinds? Furthermore, are you in windowed (non-fullscreen) game mode? It seems that the method of skinning Windowblinds is using causes it to offset the screen somehow in non-fullscreen mode. It offsets the screen so that the button activation area is no longer "in synch" with the physical button location. Does that make sense? I noticed this because you can barely see the version number in the lower left corner. I found two ways of fix
I haven't seen this mentioned yet, so maybe I'm the only one who has it. Anyway, my mouse cursor's hotspot seems to be the center of the cursor, not the tip. While it's usually not a big deal, it makes it difficult to click on the mini-map zoom buttons, and makes it nearly impossible to right-click auto-pilot accurately. Anyone else see this? Bill
When the Robot man says, "a few more turn's won't hurt", but by the look in your wife's eye's you know robot man is horribly wrong. I can relate to this... You know when you've played too much GalCiv when: You wear off the paint on
This is the first time I ever heard someone complain about projects that were completed *ahead* of schedule... Bill
Given patch 1.1 now stops people from _saving_ games AND that includes autosave after 12 turns, you tell me how much fun that is, and how that makes stardock "the best" "non-buggy" company around? Really? I can save games and the autosave works just fine...
Depending on what version you upgraded from, ship designs from earlier verisons aren't compatible. Bill
Psio says: The standard replys. Thanks boys, it's only proving my point. Mine wasn't the standard reply. I explained to you about patches and why there aren't many of them. The short answer is that if you make patches, you take away from your bottom line. it doesn't contribute to sales, so it's an expense. Now I will tell yo
from Psio: You think a software company actually gives a rats ass what you think? They are concerned with the bottom line pal. Wiseup! It's about sales, nothing more than sales. Companies don't go into business to please the masses, they do it to make money. As a matter of fact, yes, I do think t
This day and age you think with are new game for PC it would have some kind of power behind it ? Now that's just a plain ignorant remark, because this game stresses the video card so much that if you've overclocked your card, it will probably overheat, leading to the crashes that you've mentioned in your original post. The patch and the betas address this by adding an option to throttle back the video card so it won't get so stressed out. I experienced crashes all the time th
Dang it. Double post.
