I think I've got it, thanks. An additional manufacturing center of industry sector adds a fixed number of shields. A fusion or quantum power plant adds a percentage of the shields you already have. So after taking the maintenance cost into account, you can readily judge which would do more in a given situation.

Can someone explaine the difference and advantages, if any, between the tech tree line that has Manufacturing Centers and Industry Sectors vs the line that has Fusion Power Plants and Quantum Power Plants? As far as I can see they both do the same thing: give you advanced manufacturing production. If you have only one tile available for one of these lines, which would you choose? Why? Thanks for your replies.

I'm not understanding your description of an "all-factory" game strategy. You say no research buildings in colonies, slider set to zero research, but then "planets focused on research." What do you mean by "planets focused on research"? If you play this strategy how do you move up the tech tree? Starports build ships. You use the techs you already have, but no moving up the tech tree there. If colonies build all factories, then no research flasks are produced, hence no movi

How DA game scores are calculated is a mystery to me. I just tried an experiment with a throwaway game that I had started with a hopelessly bad home planet and colony situation. DA, tech trading allowed, no super abilities. Occasional planets on a large map, so that each civ limited to two or three colonies. I turned the slider to total research and built almost nothing but research builds on my two colonies...raising my research units total way out of proportion...so that I soon began racing

Your reply brings up an interesting question: Which things inflate your military score most effectively? I've read here that someone builds a few warships with cargo hulls just to look menacing and build up their military score...I can see where even one or two ships with high offense and defense points could create the impression you have advanced warships stronger than anybody else. On the other hand, some say build a lot of the smallest possible warships, this can be done quickly and cheap

Thanks for an interesting post. But isn't a big part of the empire concept to have tournaments and competitive scores between teams of players who all play the same custom game? I'm ranked 2574 on Metaverse. That tells me something about what wuld happen if I played in a competitive game. I like my butt right where it is, thanks. After looking at some Metaverse logs of scores, I feel something like I did one time when I played a couple of games on an arcade game while I w

Thank you for your reply, Neilo, and I'm flattered by the invitation to join an empire, but for me that's a long way off. I coach high school softball and I know what it's like to have someone on the bench you have to send up to bat and put in the field knowing the results are going to be awful.

In this vein, I've been wondering about the cost effectiveness of economic starbases when you build them near an isolated colony. In my last game I had a colony way off by itself. I built two constructor ships, one to build an economic starbase and one to add the module that increased production by 4%, and walked them clear across the galaxy to have a starbase for that colony. Assuming that even when the spending slider is at a high rate the colony only had production of say 30 shields...then

How about when you gobble up a minor race because they are easy pickings...is that seen as a genocide and does doing that run down you releations with the major races? thanks.

Can someone please tell me the algorithm for scoring a Dark Avatar game, or direct me to a site where the algorithm is available? (Not your Metaverse score, your game score.) Secondly, aside from just winning a game, are there strategies for increasing your score? So the empire members build up their scores by playing in a certain way, such as playing to maximize their total population, or maximize the number of techs researched, or maximizing the number of AI ships destroyed? If I c

I humbly repeat my suggestion that the final version include a "Go To Colony" command for moving ships around the map. This command was so helpful in Civ and Alpha Centaurus in accumulating fleets for invasions, accumulating ships to defend a coming strike by the AI, getting freighters on tracks across your own territory and so forth. When moving ships within your own territory this command is much handier than setting rally points. The bonus is that all ships that arrive at the end point col

Is there some reason or special game technical conditions other than having the alliance tech to keep you from forming an alliance with another civilization? I don't mean they won't agree to it, I mean the game is not allowing me to even make the offer. I'm in a position to win a diplomatic victory by forming an alliance with the one remaining major alien civilization. There were four to begin with, and I have eliminated one by conquest and have negotiated alliances with the other t

Seems like picking the strongest would be a difficult algorithm. With three different sets of attack and defense, would you be able to consider the matchups? A ship with 0-0-40 attack and 0-0-40-defense, and one with 0-40-0 and 0-0-40 are equal... until they fight each other, then the second one has an easy win.

I am more than satisfied, I much appreciate the time and thought that has gone into all the answers to my questions and discussion of the broad topic. My question as stated devolved into: If a planet has 14 usable tiles counting green, yellow, orange and red, i.g. all colored tiles, and 58 unusable tiles, is there any way to change those numbers? The answer I got was "no."

Suppose a DA player has two fleets of warships, one strong and the other weak, and some individuasl unarmed troop transports all stacked on the same square. A Krynns fleet of warships attacks that square. What happens? Do all of the ships on the square appear in the battle movie and get destroyed if the Krynns win? If not, how is it decided which ones are attacked first by the Krynns... by a rule of the game, or by AI choice? Can I assume it would work the same way if the player was the atta

I've never seen a serial number on a box. They are always on either the jewel box containing the CD, or on the CD itself, usually a sticker pasted onto the jewel box.

Thanks to all for an informative discussion. However, my basic question was never answered, about whether the number of buildable tiles is immutable. Let's say Planet Arcturus II shows Class 14 the first time you come to it. You colonize it and find 12 green tiles to build on, plus one yellow tile that needs hatitation improvement, and one orange tile that needs terraforming, making a total of 14 potentially buildable tiles. The other 58 tiles have no colored borders, they are unusa

I hope I'm not wearing out my welcome to this forum by asking so many questions, but at least they are generic and maybe helpful to Newbies. I wouldn't be asking so many questions if I didn't appreciate having this game so much, if that helps. Anyway, can we square away a couple of basic things about planets? If a planet is originally Class 9, does that mean that it forever will have just 9 tiles (counting those that have to be terraformed etc. to be made usable) that can hold

When you invade a planet, you may use one of the advantages such as Mass Driver or Core Detonation to help win the ground battle. The screen tells you that if you use one of these, the "quality" of the planet will be reduced by some percent, usually from 20 to 50%. (The invasion screen also tells you that some of the planetary inprovements will be destroyed...that is clear so I'm not asking about that.) My question for tonight is, is there some way to restore that planet to its full quality?

I noticed that when I opened a game in Metaverse, some of my control over the game conditions, such as which kinds of victories were allowed, were overridden. Is this normal and part of the Metaverse system? Thank you for your replies .
