soooo.... install Vista 64-bit on this rig that I'm building and use somewhere between 4 and 8GB of RAM sounds kinda like what people are saying here... bleh *hates vista* *shrug* if that's the best way to go about it, sounds fine by me.
1. No motherboard commonly available is going to give you anywhere near 128 gig. Eight maybe.
The price is agonizing... what I am still curious about is: A. does something this ridiculous work and B. if it does, what's the most RAM GalCiv could conceivably desire? cause I'll make sure it has it... i want play insanely huge games with max major and minor races, abundant stars and planets, and an all around LOADED universe full of all the good stuff. And I'm willing to do ridiculous things to my computer-in-the-making to ensure that I can. And when this psycho-super-galci
Instead of trying to mess with huge amounts of system ram, just get a solid state SATA drive and assign it to host your Windows page file. That won't break you through the max size wall, but will help performance on gargantuan maps, right up to the point where you crash to desktop....
my OS is on 1 hard drive, and all my games are on a second. Does that count?
If he'll get 128 GB of RAM he won't even need a pagefile. The RAM can hold everything he needs a

Thanks for the input, and that is rather unfortunate. While I was not planning on having 128GB of RAM (talk about overkill), I was (and still am) hoping that going to a 64-bit system I may have found a way around the 32-bit Windows XP limiting GalCiv to a max of 2GB of RAM. So far from all the feedback that does not sound like it works... drat
It is not only the limit of the OS's ram, but of the program.GalCiv2 is a 32-bit program, after all. So you may hit a limit even with 128GB of ram and a 64-bit system and OS.
Drat to that, you raise a good point... though i'll wait to see what else people say...
The best bet with this game is to save often, and don't stay in it too long. Exit and reload the game often to free up memory.
excellent advice, though a tad bit displeasing

many months later... I return in search of the fix for my deranged problem that made me quit playing galciv2 for two months (many apologies for my extended absence, i'm not the most reliable forum-goer) To Kryo, I have found myself a save that shows the perpetrating bug in the act! several yor fleets appear in sector 2-14 with 0 hit points and no models. As requested, I have e-mailed the save to the provided e-mail. Just looked at my screenshot, and noticed somethi

Hello, GalCiv 2 is one of my absolute favorite games (when I can play it). However, I have gotten sick of hitting the limit of my computer's RAM memory (which is only 512MB cause I'm lazy), and I don't want to up my current computer to 2GB of RAM (cause that's all that windows XP allows and GalCiv 2 games could use more than that), so I've come up with the following deranged plan: I'm building a computer with a 64 bit processor so I can use a copy of windows XP 64-bit, which allows

The first time I experienced this, it was with the pirates mega event and it was while loading a game between versions. after that problem, i started a new game and played it for several hours a day for a couple days. then, one time when I loaded, all the Yor fleets had set their hp maxes to zero and disappeared one month later. The new game was on the largest possible map with max number of players, and several turns after experiencing this bug it crashed anyway (I'm guessing

The bug I experienced seems not to be limited to the pirates. I just loaded a game where the Yor collective had completely dominated the galaxy, and now their fleets have been set to 0/0 hit points. They went from having a military strong enough to fight every other major race in the galaxy to have 0 when I loaded the game. This totally robbed me of all the work I put forth pushing them back and not getting wiped out!! Does anyone know what I can do to fix this bug? Is there some

I've read through the posted tutorials, and done a couple searches on the subject. While I can find plenty of information on how to mod ethical choice events, I have seen nothing that describes how to make events like "the dread lords have returned" or the economic boom, or suddenly pirates appear, or the random new minor race events. Is it possible to mod such things, and if so can someone point me in the direction of a tutorial?

Reply #105 by Achiel I received the very same error as you did, Achiel. That pops up any time I try to place an object in the map editor. Did you ever find a fix for it?

thanks for the info, and good point about updates. I was only asking about the pirate horde event because there was quite a bit of negative reaction to it on the forums (i thought it was cool). I will keep your advice in mind in regards to future updates, and thus keep myself and silly questions off the forums.

I just updated GalCivII and loaded a game where the mega event that unleashed swarms of pirates upon the galaxy went off. All the pirate fleets had turned invisible, had their HP set to zero, and vanished the next turn. Has this mega event been removed? Are pirates still in the game, or did I just get a really messed up bug?

I both hate and love the jagged knife. They show up and steal one of my favorite worlds almost every time. BUT they end up with the combined tech of every major race (think tech theft upon invasion) AND allow me to conquer what once was an opponent's world without declaring war on my opponent. As far as who gets hit the worst from the Jagged Knife... how high do you set AI intelligence? Because I've played games with low AI (I end up with more worlds) and the jagged knife hits me th

that would actually be really cool if the super nova shockwave travelled 1ps/week! It would really add some drama to star system destruction, and give you a tiiiiny chance to evacuate your worlds (or if you're the attacker, time to point, laugh, and destroy escape vessels).

And in response... You can't really expect the AI to be understanding about your desire to just prune a little bit of their empire for your gain. Sorry Mr. AI, I just want a planet or two of yours, but I don't really want to FIGHT anyone, you know. I guess not, though it isn't so much the intention of pruning as of "why is there an influence starbase next to Earth?" or "did you actually expect to get away with colonizing Mars? MIN

The BIGGEST issue with the AI's is their inability to recognize a player's actual threat level as opposed to their military strength. I've had AI's laugh at me and threaten to crush me when I have twice the number of worlds, master trade and maxed trade routes, plus a large treasury. They need to recognize that economy and production lead to military strength. What if the game calculated two new values like or similar to this: [Threat Score] = ([Military]+[Economy]+[Product

In my first run-through of GalCiv2, the Korx declared war on me because I had no military. I was playing human, had great diplomacy, and had been focusing on research so I bought a peace treaty with a few techs. Later in the game, they colonized a planet that I wanted badly and that was too close to my other worlds for my liking. They refused to trade it at any cost, so I went to war long enough to take that world and made peace as that was all I wanted. They started accusing me of a tactic

These are a couple ideas I came up with while playing GalCiv2. GalCiv2 is absolutely AWESOME and the most loyal-to-the-original game sequel I have EVER seen! I love the gameplay, and I'm convinced it is the most comprehensive sci-fi civ game there is. That being said, no game is perfect and nothing has everything. These ideas are my thoughts on (hopefully) how to keep GalCiv in the expansion-pack business and improve gameplay/replayability. Normally I'm too busy to frequent forums, so I sav
