Coming in June...

GalCiv2 IDE II Info

Kryo, is it possible for you to remove the posts, since I've taken the old version offline?

If not, can you create a new sticky thread for me please?

What version of galciv2ide are you using? Maybe the link to dxwebsetup solves your problem, probably you don't have uptodate dx runtime? For anything else, I'd need your system specs, OS type ...
I also have 1.0.6.5, and I do have the updated directX. The debug.err is empty, presumably because the crash is occurring when I try to start a game on the map from DA. It loads properly into the IDE. Here are my system specs from dxdiag (i can post more if you need them, I don't want to clog the board):

------------------
System Information
------------------
Time of this report: 7/19/2007, 18:20:17
Machine name: DON
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: GBT___
System Model: AWRDACPI
BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 1024MB RAM
Page File: 281MB used, 2178MB available
Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode

I don't know how to post the map here besides pasting a huge pile of XML, which would make a mess... I can email it to you if you want... It's a pretty crappy map.

It'd be nice, if you could post the mapfiles on i-mod-productions into the bugreport-thread, or just click the reportbug button of the ide
There, you can post file attachements

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

This is what I'm getting, together with a red X on the white background of the Map-editor Window. Yes, I got .NET 2.0 and DX 9.0
Any suggestions?
Well dx9.0 is not always the same dx9.0, please make sure you update the dx runtime to the lastest version, which is dx9.0c(4.09.0000.0904). Use the link in the header of this thread.
If the above does not solve your problem, I'd need your system specs. What video card are you using? You could simply post the debug.err

Secondly, correct me if I'm wrong, I read somewhere, the gameengine is limited to 18x18 sectors, hence no map greater than gigantic will be available.

can this be confirmed?

similar to Teemu, I would like to play bigger maps.

iirc in GalCiv1 the biggest Mapsize was 24x24 ...

because of the planets in GalCiv2, less systems fit into one sector.
so, to have the same size of a cluster, you'll need 2x2 or even 3x3 sectors.

this means, a giant map from GalCiv1 now needs 48x48 sectors, if not 72x72...

thus, a maximum of 16x16 (or 18x18) is really small...
Unless some stardock stuff states otherwise, you can take it as confirmed that mapsize won't go bigger than 18x18 sectors. I think I read it somewhere some time ago. The gameengine is limited to a max of 18x18.
Besides that, how long do you want to play on a map, say 36x36?Sounds like a full time gaming job
Reply #109 Top
in GalCiv1, one of the best situations was when there was a big gap in the middle of the galaxy, so much sectors wide you had to work hard to make the recoveries early enough to reach over that gap early enough.
in GalCiv2, huge Galaxies are small compared to that...

Besides that, how long do you want to play on a map, say 36x36?Sounds like a full time gaming job

I like to play a game for one or two weeks, some hours a day. fulltime? yes, somehow.
in Civ3 I used the editor to mod the mapsize only.
really big maps, really long games, yes.

so what? nobody is forced to do this, anybody could play 12x12 maps if they want, even if the maximum is 48x48...

I hardly remember any game, where I don't use maximum map sizes... AOE, EmpireEarth, Settlers... whatever
Reply #110 Top
unfortunately, you won't be able to play a 18+ x 18+ map till the end, cause the huge amount of RAM it will need, brings the game to crash, therefore, max mapsize is set to 18x18.

Just consider the high system requirements for a 48x48 map. It would not be playable for almost everyone, even on a fast high end system, probably more than ~4GB RAM was needed, as Terraner05 said

so with the news of stardock expansion pack Twilight of the Arnor

how is this going to effect this map editor????

The new expansion will not effect the GalCiv2IDE at all. However, I'll shift development to datamodding stuff. Despite, the map editor is planned to be enhanced as well, depending on my spare time. Generally, once the new expansion is out, the GalCiv2IDE will catch up the newly added goodies

I received the very same error as you did, Achiel. That pops up any time I try to place an object in the map editor. Did you ever find a fix for it?

@DarkExcalibur42
If you could post your System specs, I might be able to help you.

@All
v1.0.6.7 is out, including a Dataeditor(Modcreator). Please help to sort out bugs, since the dataeditor has become quite complex.
PS: Please read the instruction in the downloadsection to get the dataeditor running

Just got this, and it's working, and I have so much to play with now. Haven't got right into it yet, but can it load and edit the maps in a save game file? Can't wait to play around with this.
Okay, so we just download it and install it. Thats all? No text editing?
Hmm. Whenever I try to place anything, it always gives me an error. I don't know if I installed it right. Should I post a debbug here or not?
if it is HRESULT 0x8007007E the fix is posted in title post !!!

if it is not this error yes post debuger

MrKorx what screen resolution or we to use ???
I am running @1440x900, but it souldn't matter what resolution.

@jubjub
It'd be nice, if you could post your debug into the bug report

Anyone know why the map editor will not recognize my installed Dark Avatar, and only on my laptop. It recognizes it on my desktop and runs fine, and on my laptop it works fine for GCII but in options, it says DA not installed and shows no path...

Both systems are practically the same... any differences are separated on a line by / with the desktop first, laptop second...

WinXP Pro SP2
3.2 Ghz Intel Proc. / 2.8 Ghz Intel Proc.
Latest Directx updated within last week
1gb RAM / 512m RAM
256k RAM Radeon X1300 AGP / 64k RAM 9000 Radeon Mobility

I don't know what else is relevant for this... the DA was purchased/downloaded not installed from CD... Anyone? Anything?

This is the desktop debug file... the laptop is the same except DA installed is false and no path... ????

That's strange, I'll investigate into this issue.
BTW, ANYONE who experiences a crash when loading the created map, should look into here for a workaround
There has been a nasty little bug reported, which will be fixed quite soon.

@SkynetSystems
The DA download version does not seem to create the necessary RegistryValue for the IDE to recognize it, since the path is retrieved by this regkey. (At least at your system)
I'll upload a mapeditor bugfix version later today, I'll put a fix for your issue as well in there
