I've had this happen a few times. The minor supposedly steals all the techs from race X, a race which has plenty of techs that I don't. Then, when I go talk to the minor, none of the techs are there for trade. What gives? I've never been able to benefit from this one.

Firefox users may have trouble seeing the entire AAR. Apparently Firefox has some trouble viewing these very long, pic heavy posts. Switch over to IE or some other browser if you're having trouble. Inspired by positive feedback, I'll take another crack at putting together an AAR. I've tweaked my conditions a little bit as I've found what kind of game I like. My last game worked out well, so I'll use the same conditions, except th
it's kind of funny that you ask. I've actually tried this for my mod...but it doesn't work in TA. Apparently when recoding the abilities for TA, something was messed up with the range code and now range penalties have no effect on the game (eventhough they show up in the civ manager). Both Macmatt and I have tried it and i asked kryo about it. -Dave
I don't know what problem you're having, but it worked for me. I'm the one who wrote the A

Ooooh, a question I can help with. :P You have to actually select each ship in the sector. When you click on the ships on the map, a small window will open at the bottom that shows all the ships in the sector. Only one of the ships will be highlighted. You have to go to that window and highlight the other ships you want to include in the fleet. It keeps count of the logistics for you, so you can create the biggest possible fleet if you want.
Observation: The Arceans don't expand particularly well.
Seconded. I notice that the Arceans rarely, if ever, expand to any extent. Also, I'm playing a game now with the latest 2.01 and the Korath just sat on their starting system while the Altarians came and snagged all the nice habitable planets around them - a process that took a year or two. Seems pretty typical for the Korath.

I've been playing around with reduced range myself. I've found it effective to modify the raceconfig to give each race a penalty to range. -200 works nicely on a large map, -150 is ok on huge, and I'm using -100 on a gigantic map right now. Well, I should say -200 gave a nice range that was short enough to be limiting and long enough to allow exloration, but I don't think the AI adapted very well. Unless you are direct neighbors, the AI will never figure out how
This is a great, great read! Please continue...
Thanks. Unfortunately, this is where it ends. It all went downhill after the Torians fell. I steamrolled the Altarians and even wiped out the Drengin in short order. It was right into mop-up mode after that, and I called it a game so I could move on to another round. I've actually finished another one since then, wit

Given the amount of planets you have, I take it you have abundant habitables? I'm guessing that the AI shoves extreme colonization down the priority chain if there are a lot of normal habitable planets. In my games, I have planets set to common and habitables set to uncommon. At those settings extreme planets account for at least half of all planets, and easily 80% of the planets that don't come with the major and minor races. I find that the AI researches Extreme

Noooo! What's an AAR without pics? Tis okay. It's a good AAR anyway. I had fun reading it and learned something new along the way. I haven't broken above the Tough difficulty layer yet, but will be upping the difficulty for the next game I play. Guess you'll just have to do another one.1 :P

I played a game a couple weeks ago and had the pirate mega event pop up. I soon realized that the pirates didn't attack the minor races at all. It was interesting, as the minor races ended up building huge militaries and snatching all the galactic resources. For most of the game the minors were the most powerful civs. Interesting, but kind of weird. Is this normal behavior for pirates, or some kind of bug?

July, 2231 Just over a year has passed. Hostilities have broken out all over the galaxy, sparked by the Torians declaring war on the Dominion of Korx. Earlier I had been disappointed at what I perceived as some of the other civs being unable to adapt to the many extreme worlds, but that has changed. Some of the races were too busy preparing for war! If not for fortunate circumstances, the Dominion of Korx, who had no military whatsoever at the ou

Jun, 2230: Another six months and progress is smooth. Having research Extreme Colonization and Toxic Atmosphere Reductor, I sent out my remaining colony ships and transports to claim and populate the 3 toxic worlds in my domain. My further explorations reveal another prize: 2 uncolonized extreme planets in Terran/Thalan space! And one is toxic . . .
Cool! I'm still wondering what the difficulty is.
The difficulty is set to "Tough" Max AI ability, but no economic bonuses. I've been at the point where I could go higher than that, but I've kinda been balking. I think after this I'll bump it up at least one notch, if not two. The game is developing nicely, but I'm just not feeling threatened anymore. :P Here's hopin

6 more months gone by . . . A little investigation into the Drengin threat shows: Influence base? Not my first choice, but . . . Still a threat if they decide to follow it up with fighters. I dispatched some Phoenix class corvettes to clean up, but another constructor showed up. After a significant hiatus after DA, I got the bug to try out TA. I was even inspired to upgrade my 7 year old computer that was having trouble with the ships last time I played. (Well, there's also the fact that I'm anxiously awaiting Left 4 Dead!) The improved performance alone makes it a much better game, but I must say that I'm loving TA 2.0 so far. It's hard to pull myself away from playing to write up a report, but I enjoy reading them so much that I figure I'll

Reply to Pirate Mega Event in AARs

Excellent report ! I just had the pirates pop up in a game not a few days after reading this, so I followed in your footsteps. Came at a perfect time, too, as the Korath had just declared war on me and other races looked ready to follow. It happened pretty early on, so the pirates were stuck with fighters and heavy fighters, but they kept militaries down for almost 5 years. Interestingly, the pirates didn't attack the minor races at all. With 8 minors in a larg

Military strength is a big factor. I'm in the middle of a game that I'm writing up an AAR for and I'm doing just fine. Everyone loves me and my culture is spreading like wildfire. Then out of nowhere the pirates pop up and start laying waste. As soon as my fleets are toast, my relations tank with the strong races. I've got the Yor and Drengin demanding cash, and the Altarians outright declared war. The Altarians stated that it had become "economically justifiable" to attack me, or some such

Alright. I'm having a wonderful issue where GCII is crashing at random times during game play. Could be idling on the galaxy map, could be in the planet screen, maybe trading or checking stats. My system is pretty venerable as far as computers go - just about 6 years old. It's been updated a bit, and since I don't do much high-end gaming it has been keeping up just fine. OS: XP SP2, in English, though it could probably use an update Video: GeForce FX 5600 Ultra - I just updated t

so the bussard ramjet wouldn't work here. Which is unfortunate, I thought the idea was awesome. there is only one thing wrong with this and that is they are using an ion engine on a space probe going to or at the astroid belt. The key difference is the source of ions. A Bussard ramjet would provide fuel for an ion engine by bringing in Hydrogen ions from

So far so good. I like the journal entries to track progress through the slow months - don't be offended if I borrow it some day. I'm playing my first game right now, and since I like AARs so much I may try to contribute. Guess I should start taking notes . . .

That's a good question. I just stepped up to GC2, but I'm finishing up a game of GC1 where I couldn't help but do the war-peace-war-peace cycle just to extort some extra cash out of the Korx while taking them down. Eventually the negotiation dialogue changed and they started berating my "pitiful strategy" and making jibes about it. It was a real treat to find that the devs considered that tactic and put in a little guilt trip for me. It was actually pretty effective in making me reconsider m

You may also want to check that your system isn't overheating; check the 'throttle frame rate' option in the game's settings, and inspect your computer for dust bunnies and slow/stopped fans. Hello all, I recently picked up GC1 in the bargain bin at the local Target, and have just made the step up to GC2. I've had problems with GC1 overheating my computer, to the point where I've had to take off th
