Here is a thought and suggestion for Frogboy. The life of most games is around 3 years. There are some exceptionally long lived games - the recent spate of write up suggests that there are many gamers who are replaying old classics such as Baldurs Gate (which is 10 years old). But these are not going to really add up to much sales. So why not add a condition to GOO that after 3 years (pick any number) this acti

Yes.In either the Twilight folder (where your game is or the Data folder (not sure which and I dont have access to the game right now) you should find an xml file with the name of your custim civ. Just delete that file (or move it elsewhere if you prefer to play it safe).

I was curious to see what kind of metaverse scores are being posted on ToA. I was especiallu curious to see if some of the DA/DL stalwarts were posting the same kind of scores. But I could not figure if the scores are tracked separately. Is it possible to see just ToA scores to get a sense of what kind of scores are achievable? I dont post Metaverse scores but I would like to know where the benchmarks are.

It must be really hard to write good AI for a complex game such as GC2. Indeed when I read about how the AI has been improved etc I wonder if that is really so. Or else why would there be need to give all civs ridiculous bonus at the higher levels? Especially ship/weapon ones. I would imagine that a good test of AI would be to stand the model on its head. If Yor can have 128 beam attack on a frigate plus some ridiculous speed engines etc can a human playing Yor also build the same ship? And if s

Played 4 games in ToA so far. Since I hadnt checked out the betas and had read so much about improved AI, I decided to stick to Normal level to get familiar with the game mechanics. Played 3 on Medium maps and one on Large (Thalan, Drath, Altarian and Terran respectively). I usually leave AI intelligence at random. Played the first 3 games on Medium with 5 others and then tried out the Large with 9 so that all of different AI types could be represented. The surprising thing is t

No problems here and I'm running Vista. As I am sure many are. Better to first figure where the problem is before making it an XP/Vista issue.

Same problem here. Nothing gets written to debug.err file. Right after the parameter screens one screen comes up and then CTD. Using Vista Ultimate with 169.25 nvidia drivers.

Its interesting that there are so many persons advising against using Vista. Well I have been using it for over a year now and I have had no issues with playing games (and I play a lot of the demanding ones - latest being Crysis and Witcher). And I have had no issues with GCII-DA. I have 2Gb RAM and for programs that can handle it its easy to run BCDEDIT and have 3Gb virtual RAM available for these games. Games have saturated 32bit OS memory limits - that is the problem. And with graphi

Thanks a lot. Much appreciated. Have now got to a stage where I am winning more than losing. Scores are never very high though. Must try and do these mega scores once . Wish your wife a speedy recovery.

Read your AAr with much interest and after a 2 month gap fired up DA once again. Played huge, Thalan, research normal. With huge and normal research speed it all takes more time. I also felt the need to build eco buildings in a large number of planets to keep afloat. Otherwise it worked out quite well. I think Medium size is by far the most challenging as one is almost immediately engaged in a race with other civs whereas in a Huge one gets a lot more time to develop and consolidate one

Like so many who have already said it, I bought DL and then DA and will, with 99.9% probability, buy your next expansion and anything else you guys put out. Because (a) the games are good fun, (b) the forums are good fun and very supportive, (c) there are interesting mods, (d) and the devs are great and responsive and (e) there are no annoying DRM measures. In other words there is a culture and eco system built around the game that provides good fun (which means value for money for a game

Hi Iztok, Read the wiki. The addition to sensors is a real killer - explains how the AIs zip in from nowhere . Managed two victories at suicidal so far and am enjoying experimenting with different abilities/races. Of all the races I am finding it really hard with Yor though which is strange considering their starting abilities are quite good. Somehow the maps are such that its a struggle.

Just completed a game on Suicidal, Medium playing Krynn. Turned out to be great fun and a narrow loss. Started at a disadvantage sandwiched between Alterran and Thalans at the bottom of map. Korath and Korx ruled the top 60%. Plain vanilla home planet, no bonus tiles. Was tempted to retart but then I wanted to see how this would play out. Before I could say jack and the beanstalk Alterrans were all over the place (must have got speed +2). At the end of a short colony rush I had

Waiting for the detailed AAR . Saw your mini-post about tech research order. Found it quite interesting.

Mascrinthus - thanks a lot. Will be really looking forward to your notes. Overmindprime - did not use the generic battleship - it was a large hull custom built one that i called battleship . Wyndstar - I read your AAR and am totally impressed. I agree that I still have figured out all the nuances to move on to suicidal but am slowly getting there. The last 2 games on maso worked out quite

Great fixes. Would be nice if a column can be added to the colony mgt screen where users can annotate planets - example, label as R for research, E for econ etc - one char tag is enough. It would then be easy to sort and manage. If one leaves a game for a couple of days and gets back it takes a while to catch up. This one char tag would help greatly.

Appreciate your point. I was indeed going after the economy - managed to wipe out lots of asteroids, constructors etc. But was still too far behind I guess. Record on maso is improving - just completed another win . And so far no Cntl+N . Dont like the idea of doing that.

I am sure many of you have played Suicidal on Medium map with DA 1.6 and won. Will some kindly soul please do an AAR so that some of us newer players can learn? I know its asking for much but ..... Have been able to play upto Maso reasonably well winning 1 out of 3. But at suicidal its been a total disaster. 3 games and wiped out in all 3. Been able to manage economy reasonably ok in that have been in the green especially from mid way through the game. But have been hopelessly

Three games now since I installed 1.60a. One of the very obvious changes seems to be that AIs are researching propulsion tree and warfare more aggressively than before at the expense of colonisation. Creates both a problem and an opportunity. Problem because the colonisation tree seems to have become quite expensive to research and takes time. In the meanwhile AIs have zoomed ahead on military and are ready to start their threatening cycle. Opportunity of course becau

Thanks for the quick response. Makes a lot of sense. Will avoid IS like a plague . I did figure that I need supporting econ planets but didnt figure that it had to be of the order of 10:1. Will try it out. It also seemed to me that unlike in earlier games the AIs were not researching planet colonisation techniques to start with but are focussing on weapons. Have you seen this too?

Just completed a game (DA 1.6a) playing Krynn on Masochistic, medium map, 4 AIs, anomalies and asteroids occassional and everything else default. Ended up as a diplomatic victory, not that I planned it that way . A few things intrigued me and I thought I'd ask the more experienced players to share their thoughts on this. And before anything else - 1.6a works like a dream - no crashes etc - really

You've done it! Havent had a single crash and everything is really smooth. Great job. Should be on Stardock Central asap if you ask me.

You've done it! Havent had a single crash and everything is really smooth. Great job. ps - maybe you can mention this is a separate post in GalCiv section so that all those who may not check DA section separately will go ahead with this. Even if its a beta.

Was definitely masochistic. Will try and send save games to Stardock. The game did crash once as I mentioned and maybe that had something to do with it. Now I am checking intelligence as and when I come across a civ - most are godlike and few are genius level - sounds scary . Incidentally is there any point to taking down a godlike civ in preference to genius in the early game phase (given that
