Strangely, although Dune remains one of my all-time favourite novels, I've never been impressed by any of Herbert's other works, including the sequels to Dune . I've tried reading half-a-dozen or so and they do not hold up at all, for me at least.

I've not read any Baxter, though I keep hearing good things. Which would be a good one to start with? Just finished reading Charles Stross' Glasshouse ; I've now read all five contenders for this year's Hugo award, and, although all five are good, I think Stross deserves the prize. It's a very good read.

I must say, this thread has taken a turn for the strange. I don't really understand why... Maybe my point about being followed around and harassed by a bunch of smack-tards had more to do with people changing the subjects of someone else's thread so they could have a forum for their own favorite subject; which probably wouldn't have an audience if posted up-front? Well, was that your point? Did the event you described not actually happen, then?

Sure, WSMNN, welcome aboard. You will need to create a character for me to invite. Not sure about the mod thing. I would think that you could use those mods since they wouldn't affect gameplay, but I'm not really sure. Might want to post a question in the metaverse forum.

Are there any DL-only people who object to others using Super Abilities? I can't see why they would, really. They're not really an advantage, per se, just a difference. Same goes for mega-events.

Some gays are the most ****ed-up people I've ever met, worse than anything else I've ever seen. They are the most bigoted and discriminatory group of misinformed and ignorant sycophants I've ever had the misfortune to meet. Note that you said some gays here. Is it any wonder I refuse to believe letting gays adopt children is a good idea? Here you don't want any gays to be able to do that.<b

All this time I thought it was the whole illegal alien status and subsequent inability to get a job that ultimately made living in Canada impossible for me. You need to find a good Canadian to marry (now available in gay and lesbian, too -- ask your local justice of the peace or participating religious institution for details!) Please don't mistake the above as some kind of proposal; if you are my clone, as I suspect, that would be far too narci

I feel a little awkward chiming in with this, after basically dumping the control of the league on your shoulders. Nevertheless, I think this still needs to be hashed out a bit more. 1) All games are to be Metaverse games only. No cheat flags. Agreed. 2) Only games by affiliated league characters will be accepted. Rather than making a character "league-affiliated", it might be easier to have cha

So, is it true Hitler was homosexual? and if so, how does this affect people's perceptions of homosexual's today? Not as far as I know. He was a vegetarian, though... so, just to be safe, we really should throw all the vegetarians in prison or something. Just kidding, but I have actually heard people use Hitler as an argument against vegetarianism; it has to be the funniest debating tactic ever, I think, and I am a vegetarian (well, pe

Are you kidding... Linux is great for gaming! There's... uh... well, there's Nethack. And don't tell me that's not a classic!! Funny, I'm actually playing a game of Nethack right now. You are my clone. This is starting to frighten me a little. I'd love to join the geriatrics group. Do I have to submit my games? I'm still quite the beginner and my scores (on the rare occasion that I win) are rather embarrassing. <b

Reader here. I typically read one or two novels per week. I have contended for most of my (now getting long) adult life that books and movies are 2 DIFFERENT media, with different strengths and weaknesses, and it is a mistake to compare them too closely. Both entertainment and storytelling, maybe not apples and oranges, but certainly...er...apples and cherries. Agreed. Comics are sort of a midway point between the two mediums, as well, I think.

Scarlett, you sound like you're my clone: 36, living alone with two cats, taught myself BASIC in high school, started gaming with the lovely C64. Never bothered with Linux, though -- I would if it were more gamer-friendly, as I really dislike having to run Windows. Especially WinME, heh. Please consider joining our empire for older players, if you're interested. I guess it was in this thread that I came up with the idea for it, but I'm happy to report that the Gerontocracy is now alive

Have a good vacation? Quite relaxing, thank you. I am an older newbie, and I would be honored to both help and receive help from your wizened citizens. "MalcomReynolds" requesting citizenship. Citizenship granted. Welcome aboard, sir. PS - I notice no losses showing on the records for this fine empire. That is perhaps intimidating to newer players such as myself. Is th

Wow, where to begin... The reason I thought of a league in the first place -- aside from thinking on the nature of empires -- was that I already happen to administer a league for another game. I started a league for online play of a collectible card game called Vampire: the Eternal Struggle , which is an intense and complex multiplayer strategy game, and not nearly as cheesy as it sounds (nor is it as cheesy or poorly designed as most CCGs, but I digress). Anyway, a lot of us play

Hello, I'm back... thanks for waiting. I still need to catch up on some stuff, and read through all of this. I'll try to post a more substantial response later tonight. In any case, it's great to see that we have some interest in the idea.

I'm back, but I still need to catch up on everything. No disrespect to the Orcas, but I vote to keep the Gerontocracy independent. There's too much merger mania in the world these days. I agree. I appreciate the offer, but I think merging would be the wrong thing to do, especially as many people signed up to the Gerontocracy because of our focus on older players. <img src="http://img

I don't mean to sound insulting, but what you are saying sounds rather nonsensical to me, I'm afraid. I'll admit that I am a firm believer in rationality and objective reality, so maybe I'm at a disadvantage here. Perhaps you could give us an example: an argument where the logical fallacies fail us, and a different logic would be preferred?

I don't use defenders (besided cargo-based one with cheapest single gun, beam and missile to rise my mil score). Itzok, do you mean that you use at least one of each different weapon tech? If so, why is that superior to just cramming the cargo hull with, say, basic lasers only. Thanks in advance.
