During prohibition we had EXACTLY the same problems with bootleggers that we now have with drug dealers, and guess what? Legalizing their product stopped the violence

Historically an armed society is a polite society
These are both incorrect. Have you all ever been to an inner city? First, We do not have the same problems with bootleggers that we have with drugdealers. The appear similar prima facia, but infact are very different. Crack is

Some place with a warmer climate. Maybe back in time durring Antiquity. Earth's climate (atleast in Europe, I would expect everywhere else too) was warmer back then. Have a nice little Villa. Small country, just a few towns. Deomcracy of course. Ohh and a strong spirit of education and philosophy. I want an educated populace.

Very true. I think I was hinitng at a larger scale problem or future problem. Yeah, we can go to the moon or mars or where ever and colonize one day. That is scientific and solveable. But what will we bring with us? You don't think the first 30, 50, 100 years on the moon will be easy? Someone will bring crack with them to the moon. Someone will get "cabin fever" and go postal and axe thier family. Someone will throw an unwanted baby out the airlock. Anywhere we go in the universe, we're

Very interesting. Probably on the same note (or perhaps an evolutionary step to your note), why about using the brain as a computer? Our brains do control a lot. Imagine A pilot of a ship, instead of using phyical controls, actually plugging his brain into the ships computer. He/she would essentially embody the ship, Sensors, controls, etc would all be "felt" by the person, instead of read off a screen. It could be a very interesting prospect

Tod; You have some very good points. I would make one caveat about sexual selection though. While people do look for intelligent permanent mates as you state, people do have sex with eachother based solely on physical attraction. Marriage isn't permanent in this society nor is it a requisite for children. The majority of people I run into the course of my workday are not married and have children, mostly by accident. While looking for a marriage or life partner, you are totall
.... baby being melted in a microwave oven...
If it makes you feel better, they don't melt. It's been described to me as more of a giant red sunburn with blisters (atleast in appearance) Its very true that humanity has not been very kind to itself over the years. One interesting consistency in history that can even be observed in this topic is how easily we segregate ourselves into a "worthy" and "unworthy" groups, effectively de-humanizing others
Yeah, gotta love the American "justice" system. In any reasonable system, she'd be hanged, ideally withing 48 hours of the offense.
Interestingly enough, her defense is that she was too drunk at the time to put the baby in the microwave, so it must have been someone else. Oddly enough she wasn't drunk enough to take the baby to the hospital. The defense is not contesting that the baby was in the microwave, which is odd. While people can argue parents are a cause,
Right, maybe we should have let the Nazis win WW2 and put everyone who is "stupid and ignorant" in gas chambers. That could have been the ultimate advancement for the human civilization.
I'm hoping that's sarcasm, :-P What intrigues me the most is how someone, in this day and age, would end up like this. I mean what went wrong? I can honestly see some people arguing the gov't should monitor, and regulate, and blah blah....., but I don't think that is the
A reversal of the magnetic field's polarity is not the same as not having one. I still want to see some kind of reference to the loss of a field every 1/4 million years.
I've read the same thing, here's some sources: Bentley, Molly "Earth loses Its Magnetism" BBC Online. 12-31-03 Hutton, William "Hutton Commentaries" 07-27-01 These also speak of the implications of such an event, Noting that the switching of poles is a very slow process (the event it

Part of me has real doubt about our ability to do anything. Living on the moon, going to other worlds, terraforming....How can we expect to accomplish anything when we still can't deal with our most basic problems here at home?

Hmmm Morrowind (the mods still make it as good if not better than most other rpg's) Rome Total realism (total conversion for rome total war) Sacrifice (Fantasy Battlezone!) Planescape: Torment (simply one of the most powerful and well written stories I've heard) Far Cry (fun to play when in the mood for mindless destruction) System Shock (Great gameplay, Great story, Hope Bioshock is as good)

Dremels are good, but it depends on what you are doing for case modding. For larger cuts, I'd go for a jig myself. Dremel cutting wheels just don't last very long. I've actually had a dremel and jig for several years before I finally bought a drill. I do swear by my dremel though, I think when I bought mine I got a box of 100+ spare bits and wheels for 20$ more. Good investment, still haven't used all of them yet and its almost 6 years later. What about office/work/school stuff

There are a lot of factors for ships. This is really an interesting read. I generally play on smaller maps, so things like lifesupport don't matter. In my current game, I took out the Krynn using tiny hulls. It really just depends on what you are facing at the time and what your abilities are. In my example, I could produce tiny hulls faster with the same damage potential as the Krynn's small hulls, giving me an edge. Now I'm at war with the Altarians, who are throwi

I like the one week invasion, as It keeps the focus on the Big picture. If you had to micromanage invasions or constantly keep tabs on them, I feel it would take away from the overall grandeur of the game. As Galactic leaders, we'd decide who to invade, it up to teh military to actually do it. Also, WWII was 1939 to 1945. It started with the invasion of Poland. It should be noted that Japan, Germany and Italy were annexing territory (ususally forceibly) prior to this in Europe, Asia, a

Midrange PC Ususally when a new part is released in is released in a series; Top, mid-range, and budget. Its a marketing thing. For example, there are several Nvidia 8800 styled parts, the GT, GTS, and GTX. The low end is for the mass producers and ppl on a strict budget. The High end is for those who spare no expense. The mid-range is for those who want Good performance, but can't break the bank. Generally, the midrange is more similar to the high end part, but lacks speed and some fea

That's good, at the time I was doing my research, 8x was the best SLi available. I only have 1 graphics card, and Will probably not do SLI for another year or two ( its still imperfect for some things and applications). I assumed it would work with any memory that was dual channel ready, but I assumed wrong, lol.
The market sets prices, and the market sets correct prices
not always. Prices are often set on speculation and projection. Take for example, the housing market bubble, Tech bubble, stock market crash of 1929. We don't operate on a pure supply/demand economy. There is a lot more to the modern economy - credit, investment, foreign events, speculation. Here's an example: I moved from a rural area to a city, and my car insurance went down by nearly 1/2. It defies ma

Ahhh, the time honored, geekly tradition of building your own Rig. I hope you have fun. I think tinkering and building my rigs was the most fun I've really had with computers and I really enjoyed seeing my hard work actually payoff and I hope its the same for you too! I think my next goal for the next year it to try and turn my PC into more of a multimedia control center (Figure out how to stream music, wireless peripherals, maybe a remote control for DVR functions) I do ha

ok, so running on the same thing with relativity, if instead of speeding up an object, slowing time around the object, would essentially be the same thing, as far as energy consumption goes? Now, if gravity is esentially a space time distortion, causing an elongation of the lightwave, hence causing the redshift, it would take the same amount of energy (infinite) to casue the reverse effect, slowing time around an object, increasing its relative velocity to ftl? Ie, instead of u

If the X dev ever discover or learn how to make an interface, I'll buy X4. I have every game, and unfortunately the games could be great, really, but the interface is sooo horrible, it really ruins a lot of the experience. We've had windows for what, over a decade? Why use a DOS-Shell interface for a game that so complex and intricate? PS, how is X-tended? Does it help with some of the balance issues, etc?

Anit-matter isn't Hilarious! Took me a few seconds, lol Oh and if we look at things relatively speaking, with space-time distortions and all, wouldn't moving at high speed, like near ftl speed, be the same as slowing time down, atleast relatively speaking? I'm still working on grasping the whole relativity thing, lol. Oh yes - Happy thanks giving to all you Americans!
