24, although I look much younger as I'm very short.
Genetic technology is inherently cheap
I was wondering if you could explain this. I used to work in a lab doing genetic research and I can tell you first hand Genetic Technology is anything but cheap! Simple Primer (20bp) - $200 for 2 miroliters, even more if you increase length. Genomic DNA - $100's - $1000's based on species Thermalcycler - $1000's depending on your model Capillary electrophoresis system - $10,000's Polymerase - Varies
Clearly, we humans FAIL when it comes to predicting the future of tech
I would disagree in principle. Go back 100 years and the people saying we would have mounds of horse crap say so casue they don't know any better. They had no understanding of the technologies and principles of 100 years ago. Thusly, they weren't qualified to make a judgement and are irrelevant. The majority of people today have little to no understanding of the technologies used today. How ca
ahhh That would explain why some forums aren't even listed in the forum list, but you can still post and access them (I'm looking at you "Gaming" Forum!)
The biggest tip - Don't go overboard. You dont' have to buy the Best of Everything or take on a design that is too ambitious . The beauty of computers is that you can upgrade and rebuild them over time - and the parts only get cheaper and better! yes, for power supply, I would recommend a brand name you've heard of. Get one that is SLI rated. YOu may never do SLI, but the extra power will futur proof it to some extent. Personally, PC Power and Cooling is my preferred brand
Brian.... Its ok, I can't spell. This make me glad we don't have to write any of our reports at work. YaY for the Dictaphone and all its 1950's sounding glory!! He's kinda died doewn recently. I remember when he was all over the airwaves spouting his crap. I figure the media finally realized it probably wasn't a great Idea to give airtime to someone who wants to limit the media. He is a certifiable nut job and obviously has some sort of complex (we call it short man sy
I know most of you guys prolly don't want to read the legal jargon as to why he was sanctioned, so here is the excerpt (swallow beofre reading this, you will laugh): "One of Thompson’s recent filings contains what Thompson refers to as a “children’s picture book for adults” that rehashes his previous arguments in illustrated form which he states was necessary due to “the Court’s inability to comprehend” his arguments. Between the text of the motion,Thompson pasted images depicting swas
I've never actually played a game online. ACtually, I lied, I played some first person shooters online back when 56k was "elite" for a little bit. But nothing this side fo the century. Although I can see why it would be so addicting, I mean it is a "social" rpg. I mean, back when I was younger, My friends and I would sit on the porch and play table top. I can see, why, with a few good friends, one would really enjoy WoW. PS, When I was in College (I was an RA), I can remember q

yeah it was 6'6" long, PVC pipe. Narrow though, 4ft of 4" PVC then the last two feet were 2-1/2" PVC. We built a valve assembly onto the bottom side that hooked right into the propane tank. That way after filling the gun, we could remove the tank and the propane wouldn't leak out. One of us would then light it with a match. Never found the tennis balls we shot out of it..... I was an RA and campus security at College. Sigh - no medievil weapons for me....
I think you are lucky that you don't have a lot of people to discuss gaming with. One thing that I enjoyed particulary, and still do enjoy quite a bit, it that my friends aren't into everything that I am into. We get to share and exchange experiences and try new things out. My friends introduced me to Paintball, and I introduced them to Moo2 (we actually did saturday afternoon Risk during the warmer months). I always enjoyed and cherished my alone time, where I could chill an
The problem with that method is that running the wave generator takes up more energy than is given off if the hydrogren were recovered. Also you have the problem of having elemental O-- being produced, which is highly reactive (hence why the water appears to be burning, the O-- it ripping the H+/H2 and reforming water). For reference O and H are natural dimers. The exist in nature as O2 and H2. If separated, they are higly reactive. Also, even though it may work with ocean water, salt w
In my past experience, it works as more of an "Either/Or" method than an "And" method. You can have 2 prereq's, but having either prereq will unlock that tech.
Sorry for the delay, Quals were this week so I was a little pre-occupied, lol
i think two appealing possibilities for characters in a world like this could be: someone who purposefully "un-plugs" from the system and starts seeing the world through his/her own eyes without all the virtual embellishment.
One interesting alternative to this would be a world that is so used to this level of integration breaking down. Say an X solar flare (I believe that is the larges
Anyone else finding that pinned posts aren't showing up in Opera? They work for me in IE but clicking on the +/- sign in Opera does nothing.
Actually, I have Opera 9.20 and have found there is an issue with the +/- signs, but it is not that they don't work; they just behave oddly. we see the forum like this: +/- Pinned Posts header +/- Recent Posts header All recent posts in Chronological order All Pinned posts in reverse Chronological order <br/
what could avoid all of this? i don't know. part of me wants to say making the virtual world more real, with real consequences, real policing, a formal registration process of some kind even. exchange certain freedoms-to for certain freedoms-from, if that makes any sense
would we want that though? The internet is as much an escape from reality as it is another workspace or tool. We do everything from games to banking and more. I want my bank to know who I am, but not nece
Intersting. I think I followed most of what you are saying. I would venture to guess that Marcuse would argue that the rapid development and introduction of new communication methods would be in its self a reason there is little defined etiquite? Its simply become too "mainstream" for etiquite to really have developed yet? Hence people txt and send internet messages more for the sake of sending the message or using the technology than for having a rational conversation (Cause t
not to take the term "normal" lightly
Very true, I was speaking more along the lines of individuals retreating to the virtual world as its more comforting than the real world. While there still are heirarchies in both, the heirarchies are different. The internet is largely anonymous. We can be anyone, anything we want. It's also ordered. Take this forum for example, everyone has a turn to speak and is given equal oppurtunitiy. Also as you add layers of
I think with the social stigmatism, you have some very good points. We actually teased the hell out of one of my coworkers casue his wife wanted a cell phone, and he thought it was a waste. My father's new boss, was computer illiterate. After some training, he's learned how to use a computer, but before, he was used to using a typewriter for the last 50 years, so why change? It was comfortable.
there's that notion, as cliche as it is, of being alone in a sea of people. well, imag
Ohhh, I like this conversation! My Iner geek has been woken.
i don't know if what i'm saying about this kind of CPU technology has any merit at all--it could well be that this is impossible, or that for that matter that computers already work this way and i just don't understand them as well as i think i do. my knowledge isn't as firm as it could be
That's been done, I believe. Intel/AMD were working on a system where a multicore proc would "pretend" to be a sing
I also noticed that I had so many pieces of jewelry that the ship started to take up too much memory, and parts of it were disappearing
Is that was causes that phenom? I hadn't played in a awhile and one day I fired up a quick game and noticed all but one of my ships were nothing but glitches and fragments. I figured, in my absence of playing, an update or two had invalidated my designs. Is there a hard Peice # limit? IF so, what is it?
Come to think of it. I've gone through a lot of games in my time. Ususally I don't play them to teh end (get bored, stuck, whatever) But, the one game I've had on my system for the last 6 years through multiple system builds, wipes, etc was Morrowind. Everything else comes and goes. Sometimes I'll reinstall a game, but eventually I'll remove it. I have a bad feeling that Oblivion just won't live up to my expectations (probably why I havne't boughten it)
PSUs without a power switch on them are pretty pathetic TBH
I duuno, I have had some really nice PSU's that came with out a switch. We're talking top shelf stuff like Pc Power and Cooling, etc. I wonder if the reermergence of the switch has to do with the whole "green marketing" thing nowadays. I remember reading some news article saying that a good chunk of our power usage comes from "idle" electronics (TV's VCR's, Computer's). The only reason to really use the switch is
yeah the 7 sec shutdown was added so that if your OS crashes (ala win98 and XP and now Vista), the mobo is hard wired to just say "screw it" and cut power to everything, thus replacing the power switch of old. Although, some power supplies and computers still come with a switch in back. Most people never use it, especially since mobos nowadays come with very fancy features like Power on by LAN, USB, keybaord, etc and turning off the epower completely turns off the features (when "off" m
Depending on the Mobo, you can set the power button (the moment switch) to actually shut down the OS through the normal Shut Down routine. The power switch on the other hand, dun dun dun.
