Combat

Hi what is the combat like in the beta? Im not expecting any super 3D battles or anything but I hope its better than GC1. In GC1 after a battle had taken place it was a bit of a pain to actually see what happened in the battle (How many ships destroyed what ships took damage etc.) To make it more clearer I hope in GC2 after a battle has taken place a pop-up window appears which shows the statistics of a battle with a title at the top which says 'Clear victory', 'Close victory', 'Narrow defeat', 'Major defeat', etc. Its a simple idea but I think it would improve the gamers experience

I do like this idea, mostly with fleets becoming a much more intergrated part of the gameplay.  Thanks for the suggestion!

It is an good idea but Fleet combat should display a maximum bar for Hull and shield. So in less than 10 seconds the's are dramatically decreasing upon damage.

Also Fleets should be allowed an option to choose a formation. so for example you can place your Battleship infront of your Destroyers, your Fighters between them and flanks, etc and whoever is flaked by rear'en'sides takes alot of hits and engages or infront. stuff like that.

Gahhh, learn some naval history! Your core ships (Battleships, Carriers, etc) go in the middle, then all supporting ships (Cruisers, EW Support, Escorts) with all of your Destroyers and Frigates on the outer ring. Of course, even this has changed with the extreme ranges of weapons but if you observe a modern aircraft group you'll see that the positioning of all ships is to cover the most important unit, the carrier, from being directly attacked.

A torpedo has immense damaging potential but you'll never hit a nimble ship like a frigate if it's aware of the inbound attack. The Frigate therefore is on "picket duty" to spot anything that may launch a threat to the core target. Meanwhile the long range guns (or fighters) from the core ship(s) can cover the frigate from more obvious threats.

There's a reason why naval formations have evolved they way they have and any futuristic setting would have evoled in similar ways. In general, it's always easier to come up with new ways of blowing things up than it is to resist those weapons, so you put smaller targets in higher risk. Yeah, losing a Destroyer sucks mightily, but imagine if you had all those support ships and watched the big guns of a Battleship go down with one shot.

Or you know you could use like the 3rd dimension that space is so famous for and go above the formation and shoot down on it. Thats the thing about space, formations have to either be very complicated or they are useless. I think combat needs to be more detailed than just designing your ships and having them have it on the map. Even Warlords IV was more fun that (you chose one unit from your army and your opponent did the same and they fought it out til one died then the player chose a replacement). At least there was some degree of control in that system. I understand that combat is not the focus of this game, they have other victory conditions, but combat is, to many people, very exciting and fun and a chance to show some tactical ability. I really think we need to have some more control over combat than just choosing what ships are in the fleet and what sorts of weapons and defenses they have on board.
