I was shocked to find that Galciv 2 actually runs on my Thinkpad Tablet 2 (http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/tablet/thinkpad/thinkpad-tablet-2/). The TPT2 is lighter than an ipad 2, yet runs the full version of windows 8. It's cpu/gpu is an intel atom proc, unfortunately. So most newer games either run at unplayable frame rates or refuse to launch. But, some of the classics, such as Alpha Centauri, HOMM3 and Civ 3, run wonderfully.
Galciv 2 runs around 20-25 fps at the start of a game. I'd consider this unplayable for action-oriented games, but its tolerable for the turn based genre. The fps might drop a bit mid/late-game. I haven't tested that far yet.
Although Dreadlords runs, both Dark Avatar and Twilight of Arnor crash after setup, about 15 seconds into the loading screen. Interestingly, when running the expansions, I actually get a higher frame rate in the menus, including the race selection screen where the ship preview rotates.
Debugs are below. I've tried the following:
- check/uncheck almost all of the visual settings
- run in compatibility mode
- static or dynamic page file makes no difference
- Fullscreen and windowed mode both crash
- Turned sound off
- Installed directx redistributable
- installed visual C++ redistributables (2005, 2008, 2010)
- Run as admin
- Run with command line SOFTWAREVP
- tried both Galciv Ultimate edition on steam and the Gamestop/impulse version. The attached debugs are from the steam version. Not sure about the message regarding inability to locate my serial. Mod can check my account. I most certainly own galciv and all the exp.
Any suggests on how to get the expansions running would be appreciated.
