Ok, this one has a bit of a history. First, I installed the Ultimate Edition of Galactic Civilizations II and applied the newest patch via Impulse. Then I started the game and it seemed to work fine. However, after starting a new game I noticed strange graphic errors appearing. They had the form of white and green flickering rectangles, appearing in regular intervals on my sceen. Also the buttons looked wrong, with discolored pixels and slightly garbled text.
I tried several things, and though I managed to make the flickering rectangles vanish, they always reappeared after some time. Running out of options, I updated my video drivers, even though the ones I had were already pretty recent.
Problem is that now all text in the game has disappeared. I start it, the main menu comes up, and all the buttons are blank, with no text on them. Experimentally clicking the uppermost button leads to another screen, which also has no text where obviously should be some. Also the performance is really bad for some reason (as I can see from the animation in the main menu), which wasn't the case before the driver update.
I already tried reinstalling GalCivII and restarting my machine, didn't work. I'd appreciate some help here. First with the no-text,bad-performance problem, and then with the flickering-rectangles problem, if that's still there.
