I really enjoy a Super Diplomat/Korath tree and work on maximizing my influence and pick up Creativity. This is only a combo I'll use on cramped maps. The Dark Influence buildings work wonders in a domino effect...especially with the repaired MCC.

General use though I really like the stock Krynn. Their high morale as well as the morale/influence buildings make for a good passive attack, while you still can focus on actively attacking with ships.

I go with a Custom Race with super breeder, max population growth, max moral, max econ, luck, creativity, and 10% soldering. I use the Dreangin tech tree. Go right for recruting centers and watch your population explode, this combo is really easy to get a econ going very early and it only gets larger from there.

After the econ gets going I tech right to the evil beam wepon tech (Dreangin get this very early) and produce a few hard hitting light fighters to ward off any comps looking to go to war with me, after that is down the planetary invasion tree and my path to galactic domination .

Its also good to note that the Dreangin tech tree can produce sickly military production, AI's will be hard pressed to match the speed at wich you can build ships without bankrupting their empire.

What about Drath tree + Super Breeder? The Super more than makes up for the population penalty, and you have soldiering. Leverage profiteering to fund your economy while you lower your taxes to get the 100%. Declare war just to declare war.

Korx + Super Manipulator/Super Diplomat looks like it would be fun, and for a similar reason. They've got profiteering, too, and you can manipulate other civs into killing each other's starbases so you can mine them. Maybe not the most powerful combo, but it looks fun.

Super Hive + Drengin looks a little scary, too.
