Twilight of Arnor - Windows cannot access the specified path or device

I've been running Twilight of the arnor fine for quite a while until I realised there was a .91 and 9.96 patches I hadnt installed.

So I updated to the latest version in stardock central and went to run the game and got an error message:

Deleting the twilight folder and reinstalling off the CD without an uninstall reproduces the error despite not doing an update.

Uninstalling then reinstalling the game off my CD fixes this but as soon as I try to update to the latest it breaks and I get the same issue.

This is under Vista business edition x64. I have the game installed on ym laptop too and it works perfectly fine there on the other hand (Vista Basic 32bit).

I also tried downloading the archive from stardock central and applying it which made no difference either.

Also, when I update to the latest version I get no icon on the maine xecutable file, but this is not the case on my laptop where it works fine.

Try right-clicking on the icon you use to launch it (check that the icon points directly at the exe file not the launcher), select "run as administrator", that often solves these kinds of hassles

I've tried that and it gives the same error. I've even tried copy pasting the executable off my laptop onto the one on my main PC only to get identical results, as well as all the dll's.

Infact run as admin doesn't even give me a UAC prompt, it just gives me the error dialog I screenshotted earlier. Its as if windows is unable to see the file at all and other than it being listed in windows explorer, there is no trace of it.

command line sees the program but refuses to run it

I managed to get the thing to run by running from a command line with administrator privileges pfft

At least we now know the developers only test on full admin accounts rather than using standard user accounts (did you know a standard account gives a 15-25% speed boost under Vista?)

gah setting the shortcut to run as admin by default doesnt work either, it seems command line is the only way

Running a batch script under administrator acocunt gives:

C:\Windows\system32>GC2TwilightOfTheArnor.exe

The same script gives Access Denied when ran under a normal account. A full directory path was given in the batch script:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\Twilight\GC2TwilightOfTheArnor.exe
PAUSE

If I go into file properties and then security, and modify the security permsisions bya dding an extra entry for my username I can get it to start however it instantly crashes with an application failed to initialize correctly message

However in doing so, run as administrator now works
