invasions... one APC always dies.

O.K.  So I'm a beginner at this game and I'm doing pretty good against multiple simple opponents right now.  So when I feel that it's time to end the game I build a few capital ships armed to counter whatever weapons and defences the enemy is using and I buld some capital APC's that carry about 7000 units of people each.

My capital ships go in and destroy whatever resistance there is without a sweat, my APC's go in and annhailate the planet aided by orbital bombardment.  Problem is, after nuking like half of Mr. Drenjin's planets he still hasn't surrendered. 

Meanwhile, I automatically loose one of my capital ship APC's every time I nuke a planet.  Now, 7000 units of people doesn't necessarily grow on trees.  It's pretty difficult to maintain say 4 capital ship APC's (that's 28000 units of people)

Is there a way to stop an APC automatically dying, or should I instead create a swarm of smaller APC's?  Any advice?

Typically, I place my troop modules on cargo hulls. Most aren't armed to save on costs. These are only good for one thing...landing people on a planet. Then I have ships that are just good for anti-ship/starbase fights. Trying to make a capital ship with troop modules is a waste IMHO.

I think the basis on loosing the ship on invasion is that it took tons of dmg while landing or during the fight (used as a shield for incoming fire).

The only way to not loose the transport is by having 2 or more in a fleet.
Example:if you have 4 transports with 4000b troops and 2300 are lost then 700b tropps will land an stay as colonizers and 1 troop transport will survive.

I belive the system works like this so you have to contruct new transports or you would just build 20 or 30 and go back and forth conquering what you can.


So the best way to go is cargo hulls with the modules and a couple of engines to make them wuick enought that normal ships cant atack them, maybe sensors and life supports if needed.

Like colony ships, transports are expended when used. The best way to go about conquering your neighbors is to build combat fleets to destroy enemy ships (which your APC seem to be doing pretty well, but they'll do better once they can use the room devoted to transport modules for more weapons and defenses), and dedicated transports for invading afterward. Since at least one transport will be lost taking each planet, design them without frills - no weapons, no defenses, life support only if necessary, engines optional.

I think that only transports that can be filled completely by the surviving invasion forces survive. Unless you land troops and conquer the planet without suffering any casualties at all, you're going to lose a transport - or at least, I always do.

No, at least one transport is always lost - otherwise all the times I invade with Information Warfare and end with more troops than I started with would never cost me a ship.

But yes, I believe that is true for any other transports in the fleet. Next we need someone to test dissimilar transports - if you use one with 2 billion and one with 3, and 4 billion survive, does the first or socond one survive? Does this change if only 2.5 billion survive? Does fleet order, weapons, speed, or any other variable affect these answers?

If anyone feels like doing those tests, let me know the results. I'd like to know, but not enough to do it myself
