Hi all,
Firstly, i am a Metaverse player and i love it. I play exclusively in the MV and wish i had only done so sooner. I am a member of the MV Council and the emperor of a prominent MV empire. I also was one of many that helped create the Metaverse League (MVL) and it's administrator. So please do not think i am shining a negative light onto the MV in any way. Simply not true. I just wish to highlight some interesting points. (and plug the MVL along the way)
So all that aside, why do i think that the MVL is a interesting alternative to the MV?
Score.
Now don't get me wrong i play those high score big long games and i too wish my name was "up in lights" as one of the top ranked 25 players, a goal i still aspire to. The nice medal that goes along with it would be nice too.
But is being ranked on your score the only way to judge your games and your skill in them?
Some newer players may and do find it most difficult to compete with the top 25. I know i do. I might win a game, but how can i compete, scoring games that are many hundreds of thousands lower in score? How can a new player compete against the top players and feel satisfied with their game? And win?
The Metaverse League.
The MVL does not care about your big high score, in a sense. You can be rewarded for it yes, but will it provide you with a win? No.
You see the MVL plays rounds, much like your local football league might. We have teams, captains, rules and rounds. Each round has a particular challenge that must be completed. It might be a conquest victory or a influence victory in a medium galaxy. A tech victory in a tiny galaxy or like our most recent round a diplomatic victory.
As a team member you are assigned to win. Nothing else.
There are bonus points available in various categories so certain strategies are required but the biggest reward you can can give your team is to win.
Think about it, it really is an interesting thought. For instance, a new player could play only in smaller maps and never get a high score but still best some of the game veterans or better yet, a top 25 player.
Our most recent round for instance,
Metaverse League Round 4 had one very interesting outcome along these very lines that prompted me to write this. Notwithstanding being a really fun and rewarding round, the team with the highest score, did not win!!
Yes, that's right, having scored the highest scores did not guarantee that team victory. There were many factors in play of which i won't get into here (come and join to find out why & how) but in the end having that big score did not get the job done.
Of course there are players in the community, reading this post now even, that can, at will it seems, continue to play those monster high score games. Can playing in the league get you to rank higher or as high as those players?
No, of cousre not.
But playing in the League's smaller games, that do not take weeks to complete nor they do not require the most intimate knowledge of the mechanics of the game to compete successfully, may leave you satisfied and with a win, a win over a big name player no less.
I of course like many other League players, still play those big long games that seem to take months to complete. By the end of those games i am exhausted and could not consider starting another one anytime soon.
The win, though i did achieve it is not satisfying and nor in the end fun. And maybe i made a dent in the top 25, if i was lucky.
Now, what is the point of winning games if they are not fun? Yes the big score is a reward in and of itself, but is that all there is to winning, the score?
The Metaverse League. Is it an alternative to the big game high score MV....
