Cari,
I downloaded and installed 1.8g, and the only difference it made on my system was that the initial menu took 3X longer to load. I've tried sending SE bug reports, but SE can never find its zipped exceptions folder, and I can't find it manually. Here are the details I have (also sent in as a bug report):
I get three basic kinds of crashes:
1) the most common occurs when I try to save a game. The save-game screen freezes. If I switch out of the game, I get a popup telling me I am out of memory.
- Most of the time, this is followed by a popup suggesting I increase virtual memory; in these cases, I can reenter the game and save again. About 1/4 of the time, I then get another crash-on-save (goto start of this paragraph);
- Sometimes I don't get the second popup. 1/4 of the time I can reenter the game anyway, 3/4 of the time, the game just closes.
2) second most common also occurs when I hit the save game. The save-game screen freezes. If I switch out of the game, or if I wait for a very long time (ca. 15 minutes?), I get a popup telling me that GalCiv2 had to close. The program will eventually close on its own, and my game is gone.
3) the third most common happens on loading a game. It happens if I try to start a game with abundant planets on a gigantic galaxy, or with a saved game if it has been a long time since I rebooted my machine. The game goes straight to the "this program had to close" screen as in #2 above. Lately, once it does this, it won't load ANY GC2:DA game, even a new one, until I reboot.
4) very rarely, the game will stop and I'll get dumped to windows with no popup. My taskbar will then inform me that my display device had a driver failure and recovered. I am assuming that this is not related. I don't know how memory is allocated ona laptop with Vista and a high-end graphic card (which, I understand, use machine RAM rather than having their own), but I guess that could be part of it... maybe?
Here's my system info:
