Planet rings and research bonus

Do the ringed planet bonuses work now?

This was a carry over from the 1.7 beta cycle (and before), but I never saw it fixed there.

This is the effect where the Details screen indicates a research bonus for a ringed planet, but the bonus never shows up in the actual math of research calculation / tp output.

yeah, the planets with rings were supose to give you a bonus of some sort as well as ones with moons, assuming that you could mine the minerals from them and so on. I know there was a problem where they weren't getting this effect however, I remember someone saying it was fixed but I don't remember when, sorry.

I had heard it was a 10% bonus, but that was a long while back and could of refered to DL at the time. Not sure if it was addressed or not though.

Planets with moons claim to give a +10 to production, even in TA. Not sure if ringed planets still make the claim about research, or if either effect actually happens.

yeah it is mention here WWW LinkI think the manufacturing bonus works,.. but the research bonus as drrider said was not

I'm not entirely certain, but I'm pretty sure that planets with rings now correctly provide the 10% bonus to research in the TA beta.

I'll confirm this when I get the chance.

Cari looked into it a while back, though I don't recall if it was resolved or not (it has always showed the bonus, but some people did the calculations and said that it was not actually being applied).

in my most recent ta game it shows the bonus as of TABeta 2, Planets with moons are showing the 10% production bonus as shown below.

and in this other picture it shows the 10% research bonus for planets with rings

Sorry, the problem was never with the Details Screen SHOWING the bonus.

It has always done that since DL. That's why everyone THOUGHT it was working for the longest time.

The problem is much subtler. The bonus is never actually APPLIED in the calculation of your research points for that planet. To see it you have to do the math on what amount of tp's you should recieve (easiest with pure research settings, in a strictly test game), and compare to what is actually produced / applied.

When Iztok was putting together his summary of everything that affects output (of mp's OR tp's), it became evident that the bonus was not really happening.

The 2 races with ringed homeworlds are hurt most by this. The Yor can get along without it, but the lack really hurts the Torians overall value. Plus of course any custom race that you are trying to give rings to.

As of beta 1.73 or so, it was not fixed. I haven't had the time to run some special game starts, and expectation calcs, with TA to check it out. (Actually, until beta 2 came out, you pretty much couldn't check, since you didn't have either Torians or Yor.)

Maybe tonight, or this weekend.

I just checked the code. 

The planet rings bonus is being applied to the colony's research.

The moons are also giving the production bonus.

If you'd like to test it for yourself you can.  Let us know if you notice anything "off" with the calculation.

In my game, with no other unique research bonuses that I could determine, a single lab built on a planet with a ring gave me ~10% more research points than a single lab built on a planet without a ring.

IIRC, this was not the case before the 1.8 beta for DA.

OK, finally got some time to do some extensive testing.

The Ring bonus appears to work correctly now in both DA 1.8e and TAb2. Thanks! Cari, Critter, Kryo, etc.

One odd thing, however.
Fractional bonus output from the ring bonus appears to round UP (ringed planet w/ civ capital and no racial or tech bonuses, sliders maxed for research, produces 27 tp instead of the baseline 24.)
Fractional bounus output from a 10% racial ability bonus (Terrans) appears to round DOWN (same setup as above for Earth produces 26 tp.) ??
