Crashing on Vista

Hi all,

I am not sure if I am posting in the correct spot...but it's a start I suppose. I just installed GCII on my HP notebook running windows Vista (I had to copy and paste the files off the CD onto my harddrive as the CD would not run for some reason). Now when I play the game I have the following issues:

1) Random crashes when my turn ends - mainly when some event occurs (i.e. a new tech is finsihed researching, or a ship is finished construction, etc).

2) Very choppy sound.

I have run other high performance requirement games (Heroes of Might & Magic V) an have had no issues so I am wondering if anyone knows if there are some settings I should change or any other ways to fix the above. I have updated the game via stardock's download manager so I am not sure what to do next,

Please open your debug.err file in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem. The location you'll find the debug.err in varies depending on your game version:

Dread Lords, all versions:
C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2

Dark Avatar 1.5-1.6 (non-Vista):
C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar

Dark Avatar 1.6+(Windows Vista), 1.7+(non-Vista):
My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar

Twilight of the Arnor:
My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug will be erased and recreated for the new session.

I checked the location above

Dread Lords, all versions:
C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2

and there is no file named debug.err. When the program stops responding what I have to do is manually shut it off (alt F4), maybe there is no error log being created??? Is there anywhere else I could look?

The game creates a debug.err as soon as it is run and writes to it as you play, but if for some reason the folder permissions got messed up (very possible with Vista), it may not be able to write it at all.

You may need to run it as an administrator or change the permissions on the folder in order to be able to get a debug. I don't have Vista myself to be able to tell you how though, so if you need further assistance you'd probably best contact [email protected].

I had the same problem, if you have an Invidia Video card check the driver version if it is lower that 101.19 then you need to update you driver, fixed the problems for me.
