IMO Temple of Elemental Evil could of been one of the greatest games, if it was finished. The gameplay at its core was pretty much, imo, the successor to the gameplay of Baldurs Gate, a GREAT strategic game on its own, and it was the concept that Neverwinter Nights should have used. I dont understand why they have to, in Dungeons and Dragons games, change the concept of gameplay so much when at its core it easily translates to a great tactical PC game. They only take some VERY basic concepts, like classes, and throw everything else out. Do they get the license for the name only?
If you took the core rules to that game and DIRECTLY translated it to a PC game you would get (keeping turn based gameplay) , in the end, something VERY much like X-Com, Jagged Allegiance, and COMPLETELY identical to Final Fantasy Tactics..... all of which are considered the holy grail of classics. So I wonder..... WHY THE HELL IS IT NEVER DONE?
What funny is that such gameplay would work great for consoles, so they could have an easy multiplatform release right there. Not to mention that Tactical RPGS are popular in countries such as Japan, which still make them for PS2, so you have overseas markets guaranteed.... hell they could even make it for Gameboy, anyone ever play Tactics Ogre? Great game and same gameplay!
The possibilities are almost endless...... yet we get games that completely and needlessly change the entire concept into an action game such as NWN or Demon Stone. They could even make real time tactical games, like what Baldurs Gate was! Yet they do not, when those games were EXTREMELY popular.
I am right now generally bored and angered at PC gaming as a whole right now. I want a CRPG revival like we had with Strategy in Galciv 2 and Civ 4. Luckally Stardock HAS said they want to do a Baldurs Gate style rpg.... is that my only hope? I hope if they decide to do such a game that they make it a strategic RPG similar to what i've talked about here. I can only wonder what they could accomplish with such a gameplay concept.
I want a turn based strategic RPG with a great story and all the gameplay concepts and customization that any good DND based game has had in the past. How is that something that is impossible to deliver as a FINISHED game?

Good article on Tactical RPGS.
There is no reason why this has to be a Japanese console genre when great PC games in this genre have existed.
