Fusion Reactors worthless?

fusion reactors not worth it?

I really think fusion reactors aren't that great. I don't understand why the AI would build them first thing....I saw them building them when I was taking over a race, and I think they were trying to sabotage my economy....

if I am correct, fusion reactors give you 10% more economy to the planet, and cost 3 maintance, so if that fusion reactor isn't producing at least at the same level of your factory, then its not worth building them......your better off for higher production to produce a factory....

if I had 9 tiles on a planet, seems if I built all factories and one fusion, I might break even if I'm lucky.....and have the fusion acting as a factory. If I want to build anything else besides factories, it makes it harder for a fusion to be very effective...

granted the higher level fusion types are more effective and probably better and easier to break even with them....

This also seems to be the case with the research one also, why bother building a 10% bonus instead of another research facility type building.... unless you have at least 9 other research buildings already on planet.....

I noticed that too. Sometimes I even see Research capitals on planets without a single research center. Not sure if the AI is tearing down buildings to change planets according to their needs, but then again, doing it on a research capital is stupid.

Remember, the base colony can produce 24 of everything. I have had bank worlds, for instance, where I never built a research building, but built a research coordination center. While that might be less of an increase in TOTAL rp produced at the planet, I still see an increase, and the increased production is only half cost. I don't necessarily do this often, it depends on my cash situation and the tiles on the planet, etc. But it is a workable strategy.

The fusion power plant is a little harder to justify, you could only take the colony from 24 manufacturing to 26. But you are paying less for the increase. Not necessarily a worthwhile choice in most situations, but if you are worried about paying for all the production you are trying to put out, maybe. And each new factory you build will now produce more, and the excess production will be cheaper.

Just something to think about.

Well Fusion reactors do upgrade eventually though they themselves might be underrated. However, they do come in handy on a planet that is being fed by some asteroid fields. You're increasing the yield from them by 10%, which is not bad really.

It would be nice if a source of clean and plentiful energy could drive down the cost of maintaining your factories. I'm assuming after all that prior to the advent of fusion power, they would have been using something inferior and that the cost of energy would factor into maintenance somehow.

I haven't tried DA yet but I read the bonus was reduced from 25% to 10%.

You can't have the latest patch yet then, since it was lowered to 10%.

Yep, 10% for 3 maintenance is pathetic. In th early game at least, and later on you'll want the better power plants, which for the same maintenance give you a much better bonus.

BTW, there's a QA issue with the Quantum PP, it's tech description reads Anti-Matter PP, copy+paste error I guess.

No i dont have the latest, i just have what came with the gold edition. But for now Im happy im getting 25%. But so are the AI players if they build one.

I have one AI player that was building one on a PQ5 planets that had no factories. hmmmm.

it sounds like its inefficient, and really when you have the game in the bag is the only time you can afford to not be doing the best you can..... You can build a lower level research building that would be more effective, than building a research/production building, the lower level research buildings can still be built, go to "old" on the menu, and would save you production on building them if you want more research on that planet, with better payoff for maintenance....

I was actually wondering if you built a lower level research building first, then come back to upgrade it, if that would pay in the short term, as you got production out of the unit while your building what you really want......
