Custom ships carrying over from 1.0 to 1.4x

I've just updated to 1.4x after playing through several games (and designing quite a number of custom ships) with the boxed 1.0 version.

I understand that after the upgrade any new ship designs will have associated .xml files but I notice that the old ships remain as .shipclass files. I've tried to upgrade my old ship designs by loading a 1.0 saved game and making new versions of them, hoping to generate an .xml file. Unfortunately the shipyard now displays my old designs as a large number of random components stacked on top of the original hull with no real reference to my original creation

Is there any way to bring my old designs into the new .xml version or does upgrading beyond 1.0 mean starting from scratch?

The only way to 'convert' ships is to load a game in which they were designed or built, as ships in use in a game are stored within the save itself in a different format.

You may be able to 'rescue' your old designs if you reinstall 1.0, start a game, build one of each design you have, then update to 1.4, load that game, and upgrade/resave the designs.

Hi Kryo, thanks for the advice. I did as you suggested but to no avail, whenever I try to update old designs in the shipyard they appear all mixed up. Looks like the old designs aren't going to be available in 1.4x no matter what I do. I've rebuilt most of the ships now anyway, which wasn't such a big deal due to how well the shipyard section has been upgraded since 1.0
