Playing beta 4 (not the latest beta 4a) on a medium, tough, rare planets, the following occured me:
While I was preparing war, I have set some planets, which have reached their maximum population to procude troop transports and setting those transports to go to a specific rally point. That way, I would increase my invasion fleet without really hurting my global population and the associated income.
By contrast, the AI seems to keep its troop transports always orbiting its planet, which isn't a very efficient way to increase population invasion IF the planet population no longer growth. More, it means that their transports must travel from their homeworld to their destination.
And I don't fleet my transports with an escort ship. But I tend to stack fleets composed of attack ships on the same tile than fleet of troop transports
