Here's an idea I've had.
In larger games, I tend to have a lot of ships. A LOT of ships. Fleets all over the place. A huge armada. And so I may set some ships to guard/monitor a certain area. Either on the outskirts of my empire, deep within the territory of other empires, or even watching the supposedly "empty" back ways with no habitable planets that opponents sneak up on you through.
The thing is, is that if I place a ship there, and I go back and find it, say, 5 game years later (or I save my game and can't get back to it for a week or so), then I completely forget what it was doing there. I may move it off and leave myself open, or something else that may not have been in my overarching strategy.
So here's what I would like to see added in a future update: Fleet Notes. In the fleet information window, have there be a box the player can type in to put maybe 30 or so characters in. Something more than just renaming the fleet itself (Because if I want Boghard's Fighting Five to guard a border, I don't want to rename them to "Border Guard" and forget the history of the squadron I'm writing in my head). So you can mark one fleet as "Neutral Zone Patrol" or "Border Guard" or "Back Door Guard." Something of that sort. Just enough of a note to help you remember. Call the box "Current Orders" or something.
Also, I'm not sure if this is in the game or not, but I would like something that the planets have, where you can cycle through your ships/fleets. Like, you know, where you select a planet, and can go through them using the arrows at the bottom of the screen? Does that work for ships too? Is there some mechanic that I'm missing? If not, then that'd be a fantastic addition too, as I seem to have a serious difficulty keeping track of all of my ships in larger games (even with the fantastic Zoom-out symbol driven map view).
