In the game options menu there's something about tech stealing. How does that work? Is it limited to only certain races?
Enable it and when you invade planets you have the chance of stealing tech. Also I would put spys on enemy planets they will have a chance at stealing tech, but this runs the chance of spys being killed off and raising the price on making new spys. Now for the exact info of how this works I am not sure... Cause I think you can steal only so much a year... But then again I am not totally sure about that. But its always a hoot to get better technology from your victims and use it against them. Also some of the tech that you can't trade for can only be attained by stealing it.
How else are you supposed to spies if not putting them on enemy planets?
You can also place race wide spies to gather intelligence from other races. If you click on the domestic screen there will be an espionage tab next to the economy and trade tabs. Once you have agents to use, you can assign them to passively spy on other races by placing them in one of the tabs in the "race wide agents" section at the bottome of that tab. This is for TA mind you and I don't know if this gives you a chance to steal tech either.
Loupdinour's Espionage in DA/TA thread has some good discussion of tech stealing.
HUH?
I'm using TA. On the botton of the Espionage Tab all I see is "Place Planetary agent using the Star Map". Which is the exact same thing as putting a spy on a planetary improvement. Nowhere do I see a "race wide agents" section under the Domestic --> Espionage
Sounds like you are missing a patch then, or launching DA instead of TA. It's definitely in the latest version.
When I load the game it says I"m using TA version 1.96 on the main menu. The unique tech trees are all there.
You need to update to 2.02.
Do you have Impulse installed?
Hmm. Don't think so. I'm using the Stardock Central - TotalGaming.net client for updates on my game.
I think, but I'm not positive, that Stardock will only update you to 1.96, and if you want the later updates, you'll want to switch to Impulse.
That will give you, among other things, the updated espionage system that people are talking about.
If I am not mistaken 1.96 is still the beta version no?
No, that's the last patch that was published via Stardock Central. We're required to use Impulse to get any updates after 1.96.
Yeah, what GW said. Beta versions are labeled as beta, and there were a few versions released after Twilight left beta (six betas versions? I forget).
