Did I miss something? (Ship Texture Problem)

Still no ship textures.

This is the third time I've tried to post as I keep getting "There was an error submitting your post. Please try again."

I have an NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 with updated drivers (trust me), a 1.6GHz processor and 512MB of memory. Here's the debug file:

If ship textures are not showing up in the game, please first check the Video tab in the Options menu and verifiy that "Disable Ship Textures" is not checked.

Also, please try updating your display device driver, as this is the most common cause of this problem.

If this does not help, please let us know.

i'll give you credit for probably not being able to read any of that but yes i updated my video drivers yesterday and no the Disable Ship Textures is not checked.

something that might be of use:

my computer is configured to have english (US), Japanese, and German on the language bar for keyboard emulation, but its default is english and the regional settings are always american.

also i installed the program to my secondary hard drive, E:\Programs2\Stardock...etc.

Just to rule things out, can you also install the game on your C:\ drive, in it's default directory? If the textures still dont show, then we know its something else, but I'm thinking that could be at fault.

Also, do you get planet textures? How about anomaly and resource textures? I'd be interested to see what does make it through the pipeline and what dosent.

planets, stars, anomalies, and resources all have textures on them. and installing it to C:\ Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\ (I assume this is what the default would have been, as it appears to have pulled up my actual install directory from the registry) didn't help any with the ship textures. also i've noticed that all engines colors show as white, don't know if that's associated with the texture problem or not though.

i've noticed that there appears to be no lighting/shading effects either. never noticed this up until recentlly when i was viewing images in screenshot section which had these effects.

Thanks ubelkatze. We set up a machine with a GeForce4 MX 420 card and could reproduce the issue, but unfortunatly it's because the card dosent support the number of passes the ships take to render, which may be the problem your card is experiencing.

Has anyone else had this problem with the GeForce 4 MX brand of card, and if so, were you able to fix it? Updating the drivers dosent seem to help, so I'm left to beleive that it (unfortunatly) may just be a limitation of the card

FYI, the Geforce 4 MX cards use the older Geforce 3 architecture, though they're supposed to be optimized a bit, which is the only reason they call it a GF4. That card is way, way old. Might I suggest upgrading, because for like $50 US or so you could get the current budget card and it would still be a lot better. They have both GF6 & 7 series available for about that price. They may not play other current games that are more demanding, but they should work nicely in GC2.

Ugh, experiencing a very similar problem, though I have no Ship, Planet, or Anomoly graphics, something seems amiss with the whole my documents and settings thing...though I just don't know enough...

I re-installed the game from a fully patched 1.12 to the original release, and still have tese errors, hope someone can shed some light on this, heres the de-bug ...

It's the 400/420 ones that are pretty old. All of them only support DX7. I would say for $80 you got ripped off even a year ago or two lol. 2 Years ago I had my GF FX 5700 Ultra for about $120 or so, and it was a DX9 card too IIRC.

Personally, I would spend the couple extra bucks for a 9600 instead of the 9550, just because it seems they're clocked a bit better overall. They're about $50 or so if you order one online, like from Newegg.

snowpeople: try going into your my documents/games/galciv2/ folder and delete the prefs.ini file. At some point the textures may have accidentally been turned off, or something may have been screwed up with that file, causing things to not work.

Also, check out your options screen to make sure the "display Texture" options are turned on under "Video".

Ouch. Yea, $80 for that card was about right when it was brand new about 3-4 years ago. Sorry you got ripped off. And the MX 4xx line is way old technology as has been posted above so I won't go into it more.

Radeon x800 GTO with 256 megs - $99 and this card will even run Oblivion quite nicely. PCI-express though. You can find AGP versions of some highend cards should you need AGP.

Radeon 9600 or the Geforce 6's can be had cheaper then that, as low as $50 in some cases. Both will run higher end games as well, although at lower settings. More then enough for GalCiv 2.

Geforce MX 400 currently runs around $25 or so.
