AI ignoring range?

Last night I downloaded and installed 1.1 and started a new game. After a couple of turns (not sure how much but less than 20 anyway) my flagship runs into the Drengin flagship. Which is weird as his space is waaaay out of reach for me, and his flagship had the same range reading as mine. I can't believe he already has a starbase up to extend his range that soon (AI level "Normal"). This would also explain why the AI always beats me at colonizing outlying systems, as I have to go through several levels of Life Support, while they start colonizing.

So is this a know issue? Anyone else experienced this?

If you are playing on a larger map the AI does put more emphasis into range techs now then before. It doesn't take much to go through the first few techs if you set your spending to 100%. It's possible this is all the AI did. The game does show you what they've researched already if you have a high enough espionage level. Have a look through its tech list and see what it has already researched.

The Flagship probably hit an anomoly that sent it to a different part of the map. This can send you way out past your range. Then as long as you click a destination that is within your range your ship will head back without any problems. My guess is that is what you are experiencing.

Well, there's always the chance that the flagship just found a wormhole anomaly and ended up getting close to you and it was just on its way back to the range border they had. It happened to me lots of times, when my flagship ended up right on the other side of the galaxy due to a wormhole. (Kind of reminds me Voyager, lol!)

no they don't I have several occasions where a single star system was unreachable by myself nor the A.I. until 3 to 4 years later. and the star was colanizable, containing one planet that was 22. Of course I was the first one there.

Ahh.. the dreaded Worm Holes... I hate to have a "Voyager" on my hand, useless for about 10-15 turns, to wait for it to come back into range.

Could the Survey Module take out the Range limitation? after all, "To seek out new life, new civilization, and to boldly go where no man has gone before" would be nice.

the USS Voyager had not put the ship in statis, while autopiloting back. There should be an option to continue to run the ship for, let's say, 10 turns before it starts taking long-range damage.

Actually, you should be able to go outside your max. range, but you would take damage each turn. (No cargo ship out of range!!!)

100% agreement on the wormhole consequences. They suck. It would be better if the flagship was the only self-sufficient unit in the game. The developers write "who knows what you'll find" like it's a good thing to catch a wormhole. A better response should be "ha-ha. U r teh sux. You can't use your ship for the next 80 turns. Sucker."

Untill the game in question I'd never seen a wormhole anomaly. But that does seem to be why the Drengin flagship appeared on my border. It took off in the direction of Drengin space immediately again. Two turns later I ran into a wormhole and ended up in Drengin space. Three turns later, the Terran flagship appeard in the middle of my space. LOL. I guess the game is catching up on the wormholes.
