I am a little befuddled at the reports of pirate problems. Even after diplomacy I've never really had pirate issues. They destroy a lot of stuff, but not more than the AI does by themselves. (I mean unless you're playing on easy or something, where the AI just kinda lies down)
Oh, there are times the AI doesn't bother lying down, even on Easy. I'm playing my first game after a couple-year layoff, so I'm

I have an unusual problem; screen-edge scrolling and keyboard scrolling work only for left and up. Down and right are inoperable; I have to zoom out and back in to move in those directions. I've re-started the game and re-booted my machine several times with no change. Anyone have a suggestion for what else to try?
Simple enough, but non-obvious. Thanks.
Before I quit the game, I checked to make sure I had a good save. I found an AutoSave, my QuickSave, and my manual save. Then I went to Load and the screen's blank. All of this occurs under 1.07, so I'm not crossing versions. Any known workaround?
Keep checking Stardock for updates (they're delightfully frequent), and look in the Library here for player-written events and such (they add a lot of good flavour). Be careful about taking the manual's advice about buying colony ships from Mitrosoft; leases can add up quicker than you realise. Play with your spending and tax sliders right after you start a new game. You might not realise how important it is to get the best usage out of your starting money. You can set spendi
The most successful trading I ever had in a game was with a minor civ in my home sector. I set all my trade routes to them and generated over 60% of my total income from those small loops. They succumbed to my culture in the early end-game, but they resisted my pull for a long time because of the money they made from our trade and the way they invested it. I've found that the amount of money I generate by setting up short routes quickly makes up for the only-slightly-larger amounts I seem to
As for countering their destabilisation with your own propaganda: once I've got a good cashflow and increasing population pressure, I just run all my planets to 100% propaganda anyway, since it costs only a pittance.
What's the research progress indicator bug? I've noticed some odd behaviour, but I've not followed the boards closely enough to have heard about this one before.
Don't forget to rename the Galactic Guide in the mod...
If you're having difficulty with range, start your next game with abundant colonisable planets and the scattered pattern. You'll almost never have a problem where you'll need a starbase to get to that next world.
I agree about research as the measure to watch. In my games I can be running a small surplus when I'm performing any mixture of production and research, but in the late games when I pump my research to max, it'll burn off a multiple of my entire cash horde, which is considerable by then. I use research as a way to watch the overall-ness of my economy, since all those caps and such have been too hard to build spreadsheets around yet.
Are you soliciting comments in this thread, Brad, or shall we save those until you explicitly ask?
Duglis: Thanks for finding these. I noticed something odd last night about the post-Tech Capital numbers and was going to hunt for the solution after work. Now I can play instead :).
Stevep832: 1. There's a scroll bar now to see the new parties, and 2. I think that event generates a random movement, with a not-insignificant probability of no move; that's been my observation so far, anyway.
One of the recent patches addressed a problem with Torians and massive early constructor production; could they have been using starbases to extend their range? As for alien Hero-type ships being far from home, don't forget wormholes; I've had them take my Hero across a gigantic galaxy, so I'd think their ships will go a'travellin' too.
Follow-up to #300: Gigantic Map, 94% of sectors viewed (540 of 576), NO resources. This ever happened to anyone else?
Cheesy bug: The Torians just surrendered their last two planets to me (the "we can't continue on in a hostile galaxy"-thing), and both were building dreadnaughts. I don't yet have dreadnaught tech, but as long as I don't tell them to build something else, those two planets are going happily along cranking out dreadnaughts for me. I think they should have shifted to producing nothing as of the handoff of ownership.
Simple Typo (I think): When I convert to a Star Federation, the first-listed Governor under "Planet Details" is "Star\n Federation".
Okay, sorry for the size of this one, but it's what SmartException gave me. I was playing around with asking the Drengin for all their tech in return for a peace treaty, which they weren't buying (of course). I decided to throw in all my cash just to see what would happen before I cancelled out, and I got a CTD with the following: Stardock SmartException Logging Information ------------------------------------------- OS Version : Windows XP Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce
No pattern to report on this one; it was just a CTD while clicking about the interface. tardock SmartException Logging Information ------------------------------------------- OS Version : Windows XP Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4400 Application Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION Crash Addr: 005AB607 01:001AA607 C:\Program Files\Drengin.net\galciv\galciv.exe Processor Registers (x86): EAX:0000000C EBX:00000073 ECX:0000000C EDX:
Has anyone had a gigantic map with NO resources on it? I'm assuming it's possible with random chance, but it's awfully weird. I've seen not quite 87% of the map (by my calculations) in my current game, so there might be something hiding in the far corners I can't get to yet, but I wanted to find out what others have seen.
I've also had the CTD when the UP meets, and then I got another one the turn after I reloaded. I can't think of anything I did except hit "Turn", so I can't replicate. In my first 1.03 game I've got the Kwisalian (sp.?) capital in their second system, or at least it had exactly 100 pop when I spotted it, while their other system, in the same sector on the same turn, had two populated planets, both with larger and un-round numbers of pop.
The Altarian Defender and the Terran Dreadnought are the ships I had with no pictures, but that was in 1.02; I've not gotten far enough in a 1.03 game to see whether it's still an issue.
* There is no way to get a list of all know planets in the galaxy, or all uncolonized ones, or all owned by a certain race, etc. I'd settle for just being able to see a list of the PQ15+ planets in systems I've already colonised instead of having to go visit each system or keep notes. I agree with many of the other interface comments here as well, and I'll bet we'll see Brad use it as a UI wishlist.
