Hi! David Brin's Uplift Saga. I've read first three books and 've been blown off. "Startide Rising" is among the best books I've ever read. Recently I've also finished reading Lois McMaster Bujold's opus of Miles Vorkosigan. Great read too. BR, Iztok

Hi!
if you don't know what you're talking about
It's been awhile when I've been dealing at home with the Win2k, and I(f) I R(ecall) C(orrectly) I couldn't install DX-7 or 8. Again IIRC it was a problem with built-in DX-6. That's why I started my post with "IIRC" and continued with "I'd say", and not with an absolute "Win2k only...". However by just mentioning it, I could've given someone with the real knowledge a clue he might not recall w
Hi!
GalCiv2 refuses to install on US-Eng Win2k computer
IIRC Win2k only supports DirectX-6. I'd say it's the missing DirectX-9 what prevents the game to install. BR, Iztok
Hi!
For example when im building up my fleet of 1 attack tiny ships, theyve got 14 guns on their defenders.
So don't build your silly 1-attack tiny hulls ;) . Bribe another (aggresive) civ to attack your intended victim, and after they clear victim's defenders, you invade. On those high levels you need to mis-use your game knowledge and AI's weaknesses. "Normal" way you practicaly can't win. They have too many bonuses. The smaller the galaxy, the earlie
Hi! The usuall reply to your and similar problems is, you copy the whole content or the file DEBUG.ERR (text file, open with Notepad) immediately after game crashes, and paste it here in a new message. The file is usually in your game folder, but IIRC Vista has is somewhere else. Other community members will sure point you to the right location. BR, Iztok
Hi!
I have 2 theories: A ) is that they play by the same rules as ship weaponry/defense, but that for sheer practical reasons, they quickly become incapable of producing the same combat statistics as ships. B ) is that they don't quite use the same forumla that ships do, and are misleadingly weaker than they appear.
C) Non-updated combat modules regarding changes in combat rules. In DL, where ships attacked separately, an upgraded SB was quite a formidable
Hi!
I never saw the benefit in Advanced level. Only High.
The benefit of advanced espionage level in DL is you can also gain a tech by espionage. The probability for that is unfortunately rather low - I'd say about one (random) tech per game year. I can't confirm that for DA and TA. There it looks like you MUST have a spy on opponent's planet(s) to steal tech. It also looks like the espionage level and the number of planted spies don't i
Hi!
I don't hide on the internet. I use the same nickname almost everywhere
Yes, obviously you don't hide. [e digicons]O:)[/e] BR, Iztok
Hi!
In your example, he is not getting a 50% bonus but actually a 250% bonus (7 is almost 300% of 2).
Please remember he gets the 0-7 roll only for the shot of the first plasma gun of 6 guns he has. The rest of them roll from 0-2.
my modified attack value is around 17 per ship, and is about 1 more than his ... his shields, per ship, are around 21 ... his shields are twice as powerful as mine
<p
Hi!
Alright, still a bit confused about one thing... why am I consistently seeing very high attack values, especially from my enemy, in combat.
That may be the weapons bonus at work, with the Luck ability adding and insult to injury. If your enamy has weapons +50% and his ship has 5 plasmas (10 total attack), the shot from the first plasma gun will not be 0-2, but likely 0-7 (2 + (bonus 50% of 10 = 5)). If we
Hi!
But if he has luck, he rolls from 4-16, or in this case 3.75-15
Sorry, but Luck doesn't work this way for defenses , at least not in DL and DA. BR, Iztok
Hi!
1.) How do I declare war without using an attack/invasion vessle?
AFAIK in DL you can't. But you can attack something very "cheap", or you can use "passive" declaration: just park some of your troop transports close to AI's planets any THEY will declare war on you eventuelly.
I like to play as realistically as possible, and I don't like to surprise attack people if I can help it.
In reality the most of best attacks were t
Hi!
Iztok... welcome back It's Good to see you.
Thank you, but I'm not really back. I just had a bit of free time at work and checked the state of the good old GalCiv forum. ;) BR, Iztok
Hi!
I'm even considering gradually switching over to a research strategy right now
Don't. You have production advantage, so use it. Get the needed tech by invading his tiny planets. But don't start with one invasion: get there 20+ transports and invade in a single turn. If you don't, next turn you'll face defenders on lots of his tiny planets. If you'll not be able to keep these planets, invade with just so much troops to win, and abandon planet the
Hi! For answers on most of your questions you can check wikipedia. I suggest you to start with https://www.galciv.wikia.com/wiki/Gameplay , then check interesting links from it. Be advised Gameplay was written when TA was still in development. Some numbers in it might be off from the current game settings. BR, Iztok
Hi!
So, what did you play this weekend?
Stars! game LIES ( Life Is Eternal Struggle ). I have't played any other game for more than a month. About one hour for one turn and two-three hours for doing diplomacy is enough gaming for me. In the rest of my free time I'm
Hi!
Look forward to what happens next.
Hehe, you better check the year of the original post. ;) BR, Iztok
Hi!
I have noticed that there were no 700% industry or research tile bonusses in any of my game since TOA update.
In's not just TotA. In my last few games of DA I haven't seen any. IMO their apperance is dependant of the size of the galaxy. In small galaxies (with fewer planets) they're probably deemed too unbalancing, so they appear very rarely. Or maybe they just appear very rarely, so you need lots of planets to see one? BR, Iztok
Hi!
this is exact match defenses for their weapons, if mismatched your totally screwed.
Umm, in DA and TotA not totally. The way combat works in those two versions of the game makes off-type defenses quite usefull, esp. in early and mid game. Check wiki for more: [link="https://www.galciv.wikia.com/wiki/Ship_combat"]Ship combat[/link]. BR, Iztok
Hi!
the Secret Police center super project claims to boost "base morale" does this refer to an approval bonus (like neutral/pq11) or is it just another morale building?
The last time I checked (DA 1.8) it was just another morale building, and a rather crappy one. :( Better save the game before you build it in TotA. May save you a tile for STH more usefull. BR, Iztok
Hi!
Military 900 Social 850 Research 900... on every damn planet ... "Will become the ultimate power in the universe"
You need to check their racial statistics to see it that was the case. I suggest you to load an old savegame and dump on them several spies. IIRC you need only the first level of espionage to check their abilities. BR, Iztok
Hi! Works best with tech-trading on and lots of races/minors: When playing all-factories it's difficult to get good research. So get just some most important techs, and trade them for AIs' research treaties. One treaty will not give you much, but 10+ will make quite an impact. BR, Iztok
Hi!
I assume Iztok is being a little tongue in cheek here because hex editing the executable is not really a very good idea.
A little bit. ;) However game has to store that number somewhere, so searching for the pattern should give a result - under some assumptions: - integer, not float or some other data format for stored data, - reasonably low number of occurences, so changing one by one and checking with the game is feasible. Alas, the first conditon c
Hi!
Is there any way that would allow me to either disable or increase the 20000 credit cap?
Find in game exe file where the 4E20 (20000 in hex) pattern is and change it to FFFF (64k). If the cash is stored in long integer you can even check for 00004E20 and change it to FFFFFFFF... Umm, not sure but I vaguelly remember the hex numbers are stored in "reverse" order, so if you'll not find 4E20, try searchiong for 204E. Anyway, before you change the exe make sure you m
Hi!
