Personally I think sneak attacks are much too powerful. I always butcher my opponents with them, but am never on the receiving end. I think the key here is to allow sneak attacks but have it COST you something. The obvious cost is Diplomacy rating on everyone else in the game (hey ... word travels fast). But how would you define what constitutes a sneak attack? As a rough approximation I would say the following boolean yields an approximate answer 1) Is this ship a

Hi there ... I am really looking forward to this expansion. Here are my thoughts on Rights of Passage Rights of Passage The Rights of Passage sounds like a positive enhancement. I don't think Civilization's way it deals with Border's etc would really work with GalCiv 2 simply because its easy to have planets swallowed by culture without having them flip. Anyway, I think it would be more interesting if you could IGNORE this one movement limitation by declaring in the treaty screen
For those of you aching for Multiplayer in GalCiv 2 I don't think its going to happen. That's fine with me as I don't have enough time to coordinate something with someone else for days at a time. If you are aching for a space strategy game with multi-player have you guys heard of Sword of the Stars? I very much enjoy this game though its not to everyone's tastes. There is a demo out there so you can try before you buy. I think it might fill your hankering! Dan
Hey - where is everyone getting this coupon for 25% off??? Dano PS - Quake Wars, Hellgate London, NWN2:Mask of the Betrayer, Unreal 3, GalCiv2: Mask of the Betrayer *Whew* Its going to be a BUSY fall! And people same PC gaming is dying! Ha!
Terror Stars certainly sound interesting, and I remember playing with them in Gal Civ 1 - but honestly, besides there Coolness Factor - I never did understand their strategic significance. I am intrigued with the Ground Combat enhancement. Also, I hope we can assign these new custom techs to our brand new custom enemies. Dano
Bah ... I am sure I read a quote somewhere where Brad said he would be surprised if GalCiv 3 came out this side of the decade. Keep cranking out the expansions I say - Feed the masses! Gotta make hay while the sun is shining ... Dano
But if that was the case then why ever sue for peace? You might as well keep sacking planets and possibly get the techs that way. It still seems silly to prefer certain extermination rather than give away a single non-military tech. Oh ... and BTW THEY were the one's that started the war. Dano
Hi All, No I am not talking about tech trading, which admittedly was too easy to exploit. I have destroyed the Altarian Resistance and have sacked about 12 of their planets. They are down to about 4 planets and my forces are irresistable. We have never warred before and I have a considerable diplomatic advantage. I offer peace for a single tech of advanced colonization. They turn me down!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is CRAZY! They would rather be exterminated then gi
Now do you suffer a penalty if the treaty is coming from you or going to you? I thought you only suffered a penalty if you offered a treaty and then declared war. Dano
Here are my ideas 1) I make a lot of Custom Opponents, but the default music for all of them on the diplomacy screens are always the Terrans. This gets kind of tiring when you have the Evil Blargosplats and it plays the patriotic, happy music of the Terrans. When creating a Custom opponent you should be able to select which race's music is to play when interacting with that race (Dregin, Altarian etc.) 2) Wouldn't it be cool when you tell the computer to randomize your opponent
Try Super Diplomat, it is definitely the most powerful ability IMHO, especially with Galactic Bazaar and Diplomatic Translators - you can buy off most of your more warlike neighbours, and if someone is getting too powerful you can tie up multiple empires by getting them to war with each other. You might want to buy some economy ability when starting a game ... this can be pretty powerful. Although the colony rush can be expensive, you can stop some of the spurting by just squat
Brad said he is going to write some documentation explaining briefly the differences between the different AIs. I have tried to keep the aggressive personalities in line with Superwarrior, and the crafty ones in line with Super Diplomat and Manipulator, but I haven't really seen a trend. Again, even with Custom races my evil creations tend to get stomped, and the good races do very well due their tendency to hug each other and forge alliances. Of course I always try to make sure that there ar
Here is my 2 cents - I am relying on my GAL Civ 2 experience since I always use custom opponents in DA Superstars * Altarian * Arcrean Has a Shot * Thalan * Iconian * Torian Thanks for coming out * Terran * Drath Wet Noodle * Dregin * Yor * Korx I have noticed that generally the Evil races usually get gutted pretty quickly, usually becuase they just can't stand each other enough to form alliances. Dano
Here is my trick - Scour the galaxy looking for resources that are owned by a race X. Move a constructor and warship tough enough to take out the mining base to that resource. Then cause a war between Race X and Race Y. Sell or gift the ship to Y and there is about a 75% chance that they will destroy the mining base for you. Make sure that the ship/mining base you want is a reasonable difference to Race Y's turf, otherwise they will just move their new ship back to said turf
I usually play Neutral, but that is only because I like playing the slimy arms dealer. I have found that with the AIs it is the GOOD races that are my most serious competition - assuming they are not actually already spanking me. Why? Its because of Good's innate tendancy to have a group hug-fest and make threee way alliances. Evil on the other hand always seems to get wiped out in my games (usually by the previously mentioned huggers). In fact I can't recall the last time an evil r
I have found if you want a tougher game ... turn the tech rate to very slow. I have never beaten the AI on intelligent with this tech rate and usually get soundly thwacked. Dano
Try a game with the tech level set to Very Slow ... in my experience the AI becomes fricken Sun Tzu, though I don't know why. I was about 4 victories and no losses on Intelligent. Now I have been beaten three times in a row - and I don't mean just beaten, I mean killed, gutted and my skin left to dry in the Altarian sun! Dano
LOL ... Influencing other race's votes through diplomacy ... "These aren't the UP Issues you are looking for ... " Although I agree that it would be probably VERY simple code wise to give the player advanced notification of what the upcoming issue, what WOULD be horribly complex is teaching the AI what to do with this info. After all if you only give it to the player you are giving them a pretty big advantage. Though I agree all of these ideas would make the game even more de
Check out some of the packages that people have kindly uploaded in the Library on this site - The Star Control package is especially good. With all these new races you are making, you will also need some new Logos - again there are more logos than you can shake a Dregin at in the Library here. Dano
I have made custom races with 30 ability points (No Superability) by directly modding the customrace.xml files. Seems to work great. Dano
As much as I miss my Beloved MOO and would instantly buy any new installment, Atari is the Antichrist. They are cursed with the Anti-Midas touch. I would advise anyone, especially Stardock to walk ... no RUN away from any dealings with them. MOO and MOM will stay dormant until Atari goes bust (which looks like it might not be too long, thankfully!) Besides ... as someone wisely pointed out ... why waste your time on MOO? GalCiv 2 is the new 4x strategy king now! Dano
Ahhhhhhhhh .... Interesting. You see I always assumed that each terraforming tech only created a single tile, I had no idea of the variability. jp - My custom race was pretty easy to make - I gave him Super Diplomacy, and +130% diplomacy for all his 15 ability points (I modded the Abilities.xml), then I gave him a Populists government, gave him the Terran AI gave him an a aggressiveness of 50 and made him evil. I also called them The Evon (I used an old MOO3 graphic of that race - he
I think they mean influence in the little "i" sense ... i.e. making your opponents do what you want (influencing them). I don't believe it does anything to the game type of Influence. Dano
This was DA, and the enemy was my own creation (ahhh ... the delicous Irony), he was an evil super diplomat. How the heck did you get a class 1 planet to class 19????? Dano
Hi everyone, I just got stomped by an enemy who's empire was about 80% composed of quality 5 and lower planets. Meanwhile I had Quality 10-12 planets (obviously not as many total planets as my enemy), and my economy was spurting blood. So obviously he was getting SOME benefit from these useless planets, so my strategy of colonizing 'worthless' planets must be wrong. So what is the lowest quality planet you would colonize? Dano
