The simple answer is that it is a way to rate other people (only positive it appears). You can give someone a karma point by clicking the "thumbs up" button.
Abandonware is not a legal gray area. These products all have copyright holders who can determine whether or not to distribute it. It is the law. They can prosecute the sites (and their users) if they think it is worth the trouble.
It's only dying if you only count boxes sold in Gamestop. If you add in download sales and MMO subscriptions, the picture changes a lot.
I read that every month WOW brings in more $ than the top 5 console games combined.
One thing I would love to see a game like GalCiv do is make the AI user replaceable. Perhaps create an AI API that lets you build your own DLLs that the main game can call to get all AI decisions based on the state of the Univers (as it can see it). I know it's totally impracticle, won't make you any money and in general probably not a good idea from a business standpoint.
That is exactly what Civ IV did. (Well, the one in Civ IV also lets you change the gamepla
In Master of Magic one of the races was the Klackons who were also in Master of Orion (as were the Humans).
Your description makes it sound like you are not using A* for pathfinding. If you did (or do?), the check could be in the heuristic.
Soren called his presentation "Playing to Lose" as that is essentially what he did for Civ4, made the AI play to lose in an entertaining way.
The best strategy game of last year in my opinion was Armageddon Empires. It is about conflict though (with extermination of the enemy being the only VC).
Tom Chick who wrote the article said (on his website) that he was rating the game on a 1-10 scale with 5 being average (and he felt that it was below average).
If you think game play has gone out the window, you are looking at the wrong games. Armageddon Empires, Dominions3, and Dwarf Fortress are all awesome games where gameplay was put first.
One thing to note, that GameSpy article is about 2 or 3 slides from the beginning of Soren's hour long presentation. It went a little deeper in the actual conference. FWIW, I plan on asking Soren for advice if I get stumped on AI issues in my next game (I feel confident he could set me straight).
Gallagher118, more likely they would be like most game developers who have sold themselves out to the big companies and start shipping games on the day the marketing suits think will sell the most copies rather than actually being ready and stop supporting their games after the day-one patch.
Those are in-system travel lanes. To go to another system takes a different type of movement (at least in the beta it did). To answer the intent of your question, yes, you are restricted to fast movement lanes unless you are in the gravity well of a planet (where travel is slow).
Speaking of updates, Dom3 just got a new update and it adds a new late era faction.
I really like Dom3. The UI is not bad, it just needs explained once. There is a real 300 page manual and you should spend the time to read it. C'mon there are 50+ factions, 600+ spells, and it supports 20 player multiplayer matches.
The City on the Edge of Forever.
I picked this up a week or so ago and Wow! This is a meaty game. FWIW, the game is now at version 1.06.
* Do you still play Civilization IV? * What did you think of the "Warlords" expansion pack? * What do you think of the "Beyond the Sword" expansion pack? * Is a new version of Civilization about to be released that I should just wait for? * What other strategy games do you think are better than Civilization?
1 - Occasionally, but not as often as GalCiv2 these days (in the past that was different). 2 - Good, but buy Beyond the Sword
As near as I can tell these (Ion Beam techs) do nothing for the Korath. BTW, naming a tech Particle Beams when there is one named that already is probably a bad idea.
I was playing a new game last night (beta 3b) and when I ran into the Humans they had Warp Drive 3 (and none of the pre-reqs). None of the other races that I contacted had this for trade yet.
I am somewhat active on CivFanatics (my handle there is Warpstorm) Well, I play GalCiv2 more than I do BTS by a large margin. 1. Too many to answer. It'd be shorter to say they are both Civ-like games in space. I like Trip's work (hi Trip, say hi to your new boss Steve for me), but I like GalCiv more. 2. I think so. 3. I don't have a CD of it, but then again you don't need one. I have this installed on all of my computers. 4. Why? I've never tried
