I think people latch on to the carrier idea, only because it has been a staple of sci-fi for so long. The carrier is iconic in almost every sci-fi universe. One way carriers could work: put a one-sector limit for movement on all small/tiny ships. Allow them to go further only if they're in a fleet with a carrier. Or, create a new ship class smaller then tiny. I'm thinking maybe enough room for a weapon and that's it. Put some hanger bays on a huge/large they can dock in. D

Just sort of curious, what is the availability going to be on the Dark Avatar Beta and when does it launch? Maybe this was covered before and I'm blind...

@ Cauldyth Ok. I had the same problem as you. Started typing and couldn't shut up. What you're saying makes sense. Good ideas. It vibes with how things have played historically. Take the British empire for example. They had their colonies in America and all over the world, but their role was mostly to supply resources. The periphery feeds the center. You know, I think it would actually be simple to make a game were colonies are appendages of the homeworl

I've managed to get alliances since 1.3. Pretty much by playing like TIPedersen. It helps to have something to offer in an alliance. IE, you'll usually need to be of equal or greater power. At least I've noticed this trend. I haven't seen it document, but I also notice that if me and another civ are struggling against the same oppenents, that an alliance becomes more likely.

I find that using economy starbases helps me to avoid unneccessary expansion. For the life of me, I haven't figured out how to do the "colony rush" without going completely broke. So I'm extremely dependant on them in the early game to stay competitive (painful setting/large or huge map). I like the idea of having techs that expand production for more isolationist civs. Maybe techs that give bonuses to only a set number of planets? Or a limited number of uber-forge starbases? <b

Oh and playing large/huge map, standard tech advancement. Uncommon stars, abundant everything else. I hope that helps clarify.

\ Umm, how does anyone know when "mid-game" is? Well you're supposed to be psychic. When I say mid-game I'm basing it off the tech-tree. So when the AI has mid-level weapons and you're starting to see some large class ships. I guess that could be a definition.

Personally, I just junk the improvements that aren't doing anything for me and keep the planet. It's always useful to have the extra population and hence the extra taxes. If you wanna go crazy, build one production and the rest financial buildings. Possibly a farm and entertainment network. It won't give you a *huge* bonus but in the end you'll come out green. And a bunch of small planets contributing adds up. Then if it looks like the AI is about to take it you can just disba

Damn. Nevermind. S1Genocide, Marcathonas you're sort of proving kryo's point. The whole thing has decended to the point of parody. It's Stardocks forum. They can do what they need to do, I was just trying to make a point. As a culture, really, we're sticking our heads in the sand. It uncomfortable to discuss politics, in large part because of raving lunatics like S1Genocide. And since people aren't communicating, the government is able to do whatever-the-hell it wants because

I've been playing on painful or crippling lately. After you get past tough the strategy is harder to pull off. Two caveats: there's usually two or three civs you can still trade with, and it is useful. And around mid-game-- when I need the cash-- I still find that I have a huge tech advantage. Say 33% over the closet rival. As far as the smaller planets/econ its just because I've never found them useful for anything else. You can't build too much research on them, cause' the

Addendum. A'right. I can see where political discussion in the game specific forums would be severly frowned upon. That's not the place. I'll definately give you that.

A'right. I agree there are other places to discuss politics. Sure. But it's sort of refreshing to actually see it crop up somewhere other then the political blogs. Kryo, I did read the stickies. It might seem like an issue of semantics, but I don't see whats objectionable about a political post in an off-topic (ahem... off-topic) forum. I realize that, considering it's the GalCiv2 forums, I'm probably getting a little over-worked up about political posts. But consider

If you're way behind in the tech race, the smallest ships packed with heavy offence you can get away with that will overcome the enemy defences are the way to go (basically, you *are* going to lose material I used that strategy against the dread lords. Worked incredibly well to take out their uber-ships.

I'm just sort of curious why the GalCiv moderators are locking political posts? I read through the one on Chavez and the one on Republican pedophiles. Neither was especially offensive, just spirited debate. Some people were more mature then others, but it wasn't even close to a flame war. Sure, there's probably better places to discuss this sort of thing. But why the phobia over political debate in an off-topic forum? It would seem that in a democracy, it's a positive to ha

You know, I had the same problem in one of my games. The AI did expand, just much slower then usual and they built almost nothing militarily. It was a larger map, high difficulty level, stars were uncommon but everything else was abundant. I quit the game just after year one. There just wasn't any challenge. It was a cakewalk. I don't know what's up with this sort of thing. Just seems to happen now and then. But extremely rare.

I thought the version 1.3 patch addressed the problem? I've been swarmed a couple times since installing it. And though while I'm all about bashing Bush, I just can't do it in the context of GCII without feeling really, incredibly lame.

I'm a huge fan of defense. Seems there's a lot of people who are against it though. A lot of em' commented on this post. Here's how I see it: - On the larger ships at advanced tech levels, it just doesn't make sense to devote all your space to weaponary. Really an attack rating over 80 is overkill. So it makes sense to build a lot of defense, just so you won't have any wasted space. - Defensive techs are much cheaper to research early/mid-game then

Huh. Yeah that's sort of crazy. Don't know what's up with that last example you gave. You know, reading these forums there's a lot of differant play strategies. Depending on how you build your ships, I can see where fighter hordes could be an advantage over larger ships. Anyways, I'll tell you how I build mine and maybe it'll help you out. I prioritize defense over offense. On the higher difficulty levels- where the AI's research is comparable to mine- I usually wind up w

If you have a research advantage over the AI, there's an easy way to secure funding to buy ships/upgrade them. Sell the other civs your obsolete weapons techs, logistics, propulsion and anything else you want to spare. If you have nine enemies on a huge map, you can make an enourmous amount without giving your opponents a measurable advantage. I've made 100,000cr in a turn using this strategy. I turned around, doubled my military rating and conquered three other civs within about tw

You know I almost want to call this a bug. I notice that on all difficulty levels, the AI just isn't very good at building ships. Even if all else is equal, I find my ships will always beat theirs one on one. Even if they're the same class. Anyways, the strategy part of this post. I notice that if you concentrate on building larger ships, with some tricked-out smalls just for area defense, the AI simply can't counter it. You'll have situations where one of your cruisers beats the pu
