I can't describe how much I love being a Stardock customer.

Users eh! Who'd have 'em? Believe me, I can understand where you are coming from, but if everyone else had the 'excuse' that you give regarding doing their job, then I think there would be quite a lot of pissed off consumers who would in essence purchase CRAP. Here's your new TV... but some of the channels won't tune due to faulty circuit boards, but you should be okay if you only watch these channels. Here's your new car... n
Being a professional developer for the last 8 years, I've seen many examples of good and poorly written software. Games are some of the most complex pieces of software and to find every single possible bug can prove difficult. Anyone that has done any serious programming will know this. Bugs can result from human error, compiler/tool defects, errors in the testing process, hardware inconsistencies, etc. I think most gamers understand this and realize that bugs can make it through the QA proc
I just wanted to comment on the current registration/update scheme. Personally, I find this update scheme to be a perfect balance of copy protection and usability. I don't quite understand why people don't like registering a product they purchased in order to get free , and, in the case of Stardock, fantastic and frequent updates. It's not like the registration process is difficult; we aren't in the days of paper registrations, so I don't see the problem. Personally, I
One of the things I would really like to see is less abstraction of weapons and defensive systems details. Instead of beams, missile, shields, armour etc, let's have specifics that actually make a difference. For instance, how about "dirty" weapons that have various ancilliary effects, like increasing radiation around battle sites, inhibiting trade routes (via damaging the trade ships passing through, making warship crews sick (expressed as modifier penalties etc)). Races might get angry if a
Sorry for the quadruple post. It kept telling me that the "article could not be found" - I just figured there was an error posting. Please delete the other threads that say "* delete this *". Thanks and sorry,
I just tried updating again and I'm still experiecing the same problem. After updating to 1.0X.010 I noticed that in game movies, certain graphics/thumbnails and music are missing. I restored an older archive, updated using Stardock Central, and once again the files disappeared. This time used Windiff to generate a comparison of the directories, which I have attached here. The files seem to be deleted when the update reaches the "Removing
Any thoughts?
Sorry if this has been posted somewhere else but I couldn't find it. I recently updated to 1.0X.010 and noticed that the Movies folder is now empty (but still shows up as Installed) and some of tutorials thumbnails are deleted and ALL the tutorial movies. I've also noticed that all the mini-tech movies are gone too. Argh. I restored an archived version of the game (1.D1.008 I think) and the movies and tutorial thumbnails were restored. Updated again and the movies/thumbnails were
Ati Radeon 9700 and 9800 are known to have poor cooling, and they do overheat a lot... my backup machine has radeon 9700 pro and I know how hot it gets. The real problem is that lifespan of these cards is short..there were cases that core dies after about 2yrs of use. That is utter nonsense. I have two systems running 9800 Pros and one o
Damn you guys are like machines...and I love it. Keep the updates coming!
I've stopped playing Civ4, for the most part, thanks to the AI in GC2. GC2 has a much more immersive feel to it and really helps you get into your role as galactic leader. The AI is good enough that you start to develop a genuine fondness or dislike for certain races (particularly the minor ones), based on their actions and reactions to your diplomatic sessions. The UN and Senate options add another layer of immersion that is just too cool. The best part is that I've barely scratched the sur
Weird. I just got a new laptop from work, Dell 810 with only a 2.13GHz / 1GB DDR2 / X300 64MB, and quitting GalCiv2 takes less than 3-4 seconds. My desktop is immediately responsive. This is also with SQL Server, Norton AV, Sygate Firewall, VM, VSS, and other services all consuming memory in the background (and a few CPU cycles here or there.) Your machine really shouldn't take that long to exit the program.
Congrats Stardock. You guys definitely deserve it. I'm a new customer and I'm completely enjoying GalCiv2. Over the last week and a bit, I've come to realize how amazing Stardock is as a company; you guys truly care about your customers. This is why I had no problem ordering the game online without first trying a demo. The lack of copy protection is also a very nice touch. It's nice to not have to worry about overly complex and finnicky/buggy copy protection schemes that do mor
You would think that exploring with your "builder" unit (i.e. Colony ship) would be pretty much the "standard-thing" to do...almost every 4x game supports this effective tactic. I'm surprised some people don't do this.
I ordered mine directly from Stardock. It was painless and I still have the option of requesting a boxed copy. Just order it online if you can't wait. Edit: I live in Whitby, Ont and haven't seen it in many stores.
(edit didn't work) Edit (for post above): It definitely doesn't crash. As mentioned above, I'll give it some time to regenerate the textures (I waited about 20-30 seconds before closing the app from the taskbar - which at least told me it was still responding to Windows messages.)
When I alt-tab I get the same result, a black screen when returning to the game, but I just figured it was my crappy graphics card/old driver. Laptop, P4 2.0GHz/1GB RAM/ATi Mobility 7500 drv: 6.14.10.6378. By the way, how do you get this game to run in windowed mode? I tried unchecking Full screen in the video options, restarting (started full screen), and even tried Alt-Enter, but nadda. Edit: It definitely doesn't crash. As mentioned above, I'll give it some
For those of you with older laptops, I justed wanted to let you know that GC2 seems to work perfectly on my company-issued (shhhh ) development laptop: Dell C640 2.0 GHz, 1GB, ATi Mobility 7500, Windows XP SP2 There are a few very minor graphical anomalies, such the stars/suns sparkling as you get farther away from them, but other than that, it runs pretty well. I haven't had much o
