A..Without question.

I'm also not sure about the comparisons between the two games. They are very different apart from being turn based. In my view GC2 is pure space 4X,while Civ4 is unique in its genre.Alpha centuari was the best Civ game in my view, if only it had CIV4 A.I.

I never could really get into civ 4 much. Did you guys even like it? I love these types of games but GC2 beats Civ4 hands down in my book. I ahve already logged more hours on GC2.

Also, what does "4x" mean? I see it a lot when refering to these types of games.

It refers to the basic type of gameplay that's at the core of the genre:

eXplore
eXpand
eXploit
eXterminate

Those, in a nutshell, are the four phases of this kind of strategy game - and why it's called "4X".

I haven't played Civ IV in about a month. Now that I have GCII it will probably be many months before I do.

Civ4 was alright. I played it for a while, but it never really held my attention very well. It's system just wasn't as fun as GC2. I can't stop playing GC2. It's becoming a problem.

4x mean explore, expand, exploit, exterminate I believe. It's the genre of Turnbased strategy that GC2 falls into. The gameplay is structured around those 4 elements.

A. Galciv2 is buggier, but Civ4 is just so slooooow. I don't want to take vacation just to play Civ4.

Civ4 doesn't run well on any of the machines in my house.. GC2 runs perfectly fine on all of them.

So, GC is getting much more playtime . Plus, I have yet to play a complete Civ4 game in three hours.

I was considering purchasing Civ4 but never did. My time to play computer games is very limited and it is all going to GalCiv2! Someday I'll pick up Civ4 in the bargain bin.

Alpha Centuari was the best Civ game in my view, if only it had CIV4 A.I.

I loved Alpha Centuari! It was the first game I ever bought; picked it up at a mall for only US$20. Anyone try the sequel Alien Crossfire?

I really liked Civ IV and put a fair amount of my hours into it. Currently in Gal Civ 2 I am playing the campaign and wondering if I wouldn't be having more fun if I weren't.

I really thought I would enjoy the ship building but find it terribly difficult to do. Every time I try to put wings or whatever else on a hull I can never get them at the same angle or things of that nature.

Anyway, currently at least it is A.

buggier my butt...

A... Civ 4.. is a distant memory for me now.

I don't even HAVE Civ4.

I was having the same problem. Try using the zoom in the upper right hand corner. When their are a lot of hardpoints it helps me to zoom in, count which arrow i want to place a piece on, then click and hold down the scroll wheel and pivot to the other side, count the arrows and place the other one.

Changing the size of the pieces also makes them look cleaner depending on where you place it.

I'm also going to start doing what several other people have suggested. Make a template with nothing but hulls and extras. Then as I get new technologies, upgrade the template and add whatever engines/weapons/defense I want and save under a different name.

Someone else also posted a naming scheme to keep them all together in the ship list. They use x-yyy-z. Where x is a letter for the hull type, yyy is a name for the class, and I forget what z is but I'll look it up again tonight.

LOL, kinda the wrong place to ask that poll - expect biased results

Better to ask it on a Civ 4 forum

I loaded Civ 4 played a couple of games but it feels like something is missing from it that I can't put my finger on.

Now Gal Civ 2 has kept me up till 4am everynight this week since I got the game on Monday. I would say my weekend would be spent playing but at this point I'm pretty sure it's going to be spent sleeping! In fact, I'm ready to go comatose when I get off work today...hmmm....ok, well maybe, after a couple turns ... I 'm trying to blockade the Drengin, just need a little bit more time... then I can sleep...

C. Civ4, but only playing the Fall From Heaven mod. That mod is so much better than vanilla.

F. None of the above.

I'm playing more WoW than anything, which is kinda sad. WoW is one of the best games ever for the most part - in terms of raw gameplay it's amazing (til you hit 60 and the game turns into EQLive) - but, WoW has, on average, the lowest quality players of any game, sport, event, or humanity in general - ever. The immaturity is almost unbelievable. I guess I could consider it amusing - but it's actually not even funny - just pathetic. And the saddest thing of all is that the worst players in online games aren't young kids - they're college students and otherwise educated adults who are ACTING like idiots because they're hiding behind anonymous avatars. By some twisted turn of logic acting like a complete moron has become not only acceptable, but something to strive for in MMORPGs. It's crushing. Anyways...

I was anxiously awaiting GC2 - I'm picky about games and desperately need something worth playing to get me away from WoW - I must be gaming in some form at all times - it's bred into me or something, preordered GalCiv2 (first game preordered ever due to the ability to preorder and DL, but I've been somewhat put off by AI foolishness ("intelligent" AIs suiciding tranpsorts and the like) and some bugs that really bother me. So, I won't fully dive into GC2 for another patch or two, which is a bummer but that's just how it is for me personally. I'll play some GalCiv2 this weekend if there's another patch today (crossing my fingers).

I got Civ IV on release day and played it to death for the first few weeks. I don't play it at all now, BUT, with games like Civ or GalCiv this is how it goes for me. I play it for a few weeks instensely then don't play at all for a while. With their high quality gameplay, fun factor, and replayability I always come back to these games, unlike a lot of other great games that have limited/no replay value that I play thru once and shelf forever.

I know I'll be back to Civ IV, and I know I'll have many rounds of GalCiv.

I stopped playing Civ4 after I played through a game and I bought the game as it released. Just too similar to 2 (I skipped 3)

(A), but mostly because GC2 just came out. I've played a ton of Civ IV over the last 4 months!

At the moment, I'd guess that CivIV will have the most replay interest for me going forward. I'm especially interested to see what happens after Firaxis releases their SDK. But to give GC2 its due, it's also a fun game and we'll see how it improves after a few more patches.

A. I stopped playing Civ4 long before GC2 came out. I just wasn't hooked as i was with CIV3. Now i'm hoping that in the future CIV will be greatly improved so that i can play both.

B, more galciv as its just come out.

Civ 4 is what civ always should have been, but never was. It's a strategy game! I think Frogboy's comments on the "why galciv 2 is singleplayer only" thread are very insightful. Civ4 is designed as a multiplayer game, with the streamlining that implies, and weaker AI than GC2. This means it's got a bit less atmosphere than GC2. But it scores strongly in terms of transparent mechanisms - you can really tell what effect your actions have. GC2 is sometimes wilfully obscure, and this is compounded by the gameplay-not-working-as-described bugs that seem to have crept in (helped by the lack of transparency in a vicious circle, I suspect).

I've stopped playing Civ4, for the most part, thanks to the AI in GC2. GC2 has a much more immersive feel to it and really helps you get into your role as galactic leader. The AI is good enough that you start to develop a genuine fondness or dislike for certain races (particularly the minor ones), based on their actions and reactions to your diplomatic sessions. The UN and Senate options add another layer of immersion that is just too cool. The best part is that I've barely scratched the surface of this game. This is easily the best strategy game I've purchased in a LONG while.

E. I haven't yet played a full game of galciv2, and have had it since the launch. (but still prefer it over civ4)

Though, admittedly, after the newness of GalCiv II wears off, I'll probably revert to B. They are both excellent games, and it'll depend on what I'm in the mood for. Since I love the ship customization, it'll mostly be Gal Civ II,but there are times...
