WinXP is a much more stable platform than Win98. Microsoft has dropped support for Win98 (so no more security patches) and many developers are not supporting Win98 for their new software releases. If you are in the market for a new PC you might want to what until Windows Vista is released. Playing a game with a gigantic map (every abundant) created under v1.0 is painful with only 512MB because of the memory issues with that version. Improvements were made to this problem in v1.11 and

I have not yet tried Masochistic, playing my first Metaverse game on created under v1.0 with level Painful, gigantic map, every abundant, and tight clusters (and finding it too easy). Given the huge bonuses the AI gets at Masochistic and above, the only way to win on v1.2 (with loss of first strike advantage and better planet management by the AI) at this level is by agressive tech trading plus selecting tight clusters and building up a network of economic starbases so you can keep up.

Rather than use the core ships create new designs based on your current technology. The core ships are very slow; you'll want at least a warp engine on your attack vessels and by mid-late game on a very large maps you'll want two hyper-warpIII engines. Speed is critical to attack fleets even with the first strike advantage going away in v1.2!

The Advanced and Ultimate Miniaturization techs: Somewhat useful, but not as useful as they should be since for some reason most components increase in size at these two techs, which is kind of the opposite of miniaturization, don't you think? Miniaturization should be called Expansion as it increases the size of the ship hulls; the siz

You'd think it was the opposite, as from Stardock there's no shipping or printing cost AND there's no retailer or publisher getting a cut. Stardock is the developer and publisher for GalCiv II. I don't think it is illegal for Stardock to sell below MSRP but to do so would anger the retailers. It is hard for an independent game deve

In the v1.0 it did not remove any components, then in v1.0X it began removing all functional (keeping eye candy) components, in v1.1 there is an option setting in the Options menu (default the v1.0X behavior) for you to choose which behavior you want.

Sub-optimal defenses provide square root (rounded down) defense so for example shields 8 provides sqrt(8)=2 defense against missiles and mass drivers. It is best to only use one type of weapon on your ships for two reasons: (1) Each weapon type is fired separately against the enemies defenses (i.e., say you have beam 9 and missiles 9 against shields 9, then it will be beam 9 against shields 9 and missiles 9 against shields sqrt(9)=3 vs. beam 18 against sheilds 9) (2) By focu

Currently when a race surrenders to another, the second race gets their planets. In addition they should also get their starbases, ships, technology, and star maps. Also the fortunes of war should play a role in your race's moral. If you are doing well your moral goes up and if you are losing it goes down; surely losing key planets (homeworld, capitals, and high PQ planets) should lower your moral.

I think creating an expansion that focuses on a new campaign as its primary focus is a mistake. I've never been one for campaigns in TBS games, they are too constricting. I'd much rather you focus on improving the United Planets, epsionage and other game mechanics. Having other sides people incorporated into your population mean more would also be a bonus, I'd really like

A few high PQ planets in a tight cluster can become a major production/research powerhouses when combined with stacked economic starbases. For example, 4 maxed out economic starbases would give 132% bonus to production/research and half of that is free! If the planets are located near a corner (where 4 sectors meet) you could have 16 economic starbases for a 528% production/research bonus! The Iconain Refuge and Thalan Empire have good starting planets.

I disable my networking and virus/adware scanning before playing a game. Still I see delays do to swaping on my 2.8MHz P4 with 512MB RAM. I'm seeing a delay of about 10 seconds between turns mid-game on a gigantic map (everything abundant) so I guess I should consider myself lucky. Restoring a saved game takes several minutes. Looking forward to v1.2! <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/

If a planet has a ship bonus of X% then ships built there have their weapons (and maybe defenses, I don't use them) boosted by X%.

I noticed last night in v1.11 (game originally created in v1.1) and in previous versions that on the game stats page when I select "Top Player" it does not always show the top player. in my current game (painfull, gigantic, everything abundant) the Torian's are 1st for influence, the Altarians are 2nd, and I'm 3rd; the Altarians are listed as the top influence player. Looking forward to v1.2! <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Congrats.gif" border=0 ALIGN="absmiddle
