Game smoothness...

Is there a possibility that the final game will run a little smoother than the beta? Towards the end of the game, when lots of ships are present, I am experiencing a lot of lag. I have a 2.0Ghz Centrino with 1.25GBs of RAM. That shouldn't be happening.

It's smooth. The journal entry related to optimisation is also pretty interesting.

Yes, the final release will have many, many improvements to optimize performance. Also worth mentioning, measuring the game performance by CPU is misleading because the games real performance demands are on the graphics card and not the CPU.

Good to hear that the final release will have improvements on optimization of performance. I know that the graphics card is the main factor in game performance, but I have ran games with much more graphics processing just fine.
