I purchased it off Steam a few days ago and am looking forward to getting back in to the game. But do you (or anyone else) know if there is a way to disable one or more of the DLC?

You can't select a version via the Steam app. Just go into the Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GalCiv directory and select the executable you want.

Now for my question: how do you opt in to the CU? I can set Steam to opt-in, but the key Steam provides doesn't work.

I've got this gem for free on Humble Bundle back in 2018, and it quickly became my favorite. I think I've scored a couple hundred hours on GalCiv2 (more than for GalCiv3), though that isn't reflected in my Steam account because I've originally installed it with a standalone installer. Even after playing GC3 it's fine sometimes to return back to its predecessor, especially considering the some features which were lost in the newer title.

Recently, one of my friends became interested in Galactic Civilizations and, when choosing between GC2 or GC3 for the first time, he picked GC2. Right now he's trying his first game. That does its job to show the game isn't dead.

I wonder, does anyone ever play Metaverse scenarios? Long time ago I have created a character of mine in the Metaverse, though I'm not keen on net gaming and, frankly speaking, I don't have much idea what Metaverse is all about.

Oh yeah, I'm playing this bad boy. I don't have a lot of experience with it but I love the game itself.

In fact I just discovered something that would have saved me a LOT of angst ... I didn't realize that the Dread Lord arseholes that were attacking me were showing up as part of a Meta Event (which you toggle on/off at the beginning of the game). I'd screwed around with the options so many times and didn't know what some of them were for ... obviously lol.

But I Googled it and found a post on this here forum from a ways back (2014) that 'splained it perfectly. BYE Dread Lords, at least until I get better at the game, for Spock's sake!

If peeps are commenting and asking/answering questions on the forums then I'll absolutely be on here, too ... asking mostly. L8r, folks, gotta start up another game!

I bought the game many many years ago (early 2000's) on CD, the Dread Lords version, and play it off an on. In fact I just came to this forum right from playing a session, the Terran Alliance. I love playing it when I can. I have been wanting to make my own maps for the game. I don't know, I thought I remember seeing something in the text or manual about a map editor once, or maybe I am confusing it with another game? Any how, I would like to make my own maps and play games out with them. Been interested in playing the first Galactic Civ, so I am looking for buying a copy of it to download.

The first GalCiv is available on Steam and GOG. I've managed to find a pair of old CDs with the game — so technically I have the entire series — but it didn't work under Linux with Wine, unlike GalCiv2 and 3.

Yep, just verified. First off, on GOG they've got the Ultimate Edition GalCiv I for $9.99.

On Steam, the only version I found was a bundle of GalCiv I and GalCiv II (both Ultimate Editions), for just under $30. Since I already have GalCiv II, Steam offered just GalCiv I to me for $4.99. Guess it depends on what one has/wants or is willing to buy.

I may get GalCiv I just to try it out (again?). I've thought for many, many years now that I'd played that game a little back in the day after buying CD versions of both it and the debut of Fallout on the same trip to ... uh ... I'm getting old ... Comp USA? Was that a thing?

But that can't be possible, right? I know for certain that I bought Fallout in late 1997 (it released in October of that year) ... but according to Wiki GalCiv I wasn't released until 2003?

Anyone have any idea of what new/newish space strategy game for the PC I bought in the late fall of 1997?

Whatever it was I didn't play it much, due to Fallout becoming one of my favorite games/franchises of all time (I happily disembarked from that boat, however, prior to FO4's release, and if Bethesda doesn't do something truly extraordinary with Elder Scrolls VI, I plan to just forget that they've made anything after FO3 and Skyrim).

My best guess, based on some weak Google-fu, is either Master of Orion II (which I didn't think I'd ever played) or Space Empires III (which I don't remember at *all*) ...

Years ago I bought GalCiv III + Crusade Expansion Pack DLC but I have yet to install that, as I've heard so many *terrible* things about it, if nothing else at least in terms of comparison to it's predecessor.

Would anyone like to defend GalCiv III or 'splain why it's a good one to play now (especially since I already have the base game)?

And/or, same question for GalCiv I?

If you have Twilight of the Arnor then you can make your own maps. There's a map editor included in it. I think Dread Lords lacks this...

Twilight is the best and most interesting version of the game IMO, although Dark Avatar is also good. Dread Lords is sort of terribly unbalanced and sometimes not very playerfriendly. But it's still a good game with a good atmosphere & score and a good concept.
